Mrs Yvonne Norrington [#3681] whose husband was 'Harry Norrington [#3680], eldest son of Harry Norrington [#1302], who was son of Walter Norrington of the Red Lion, Coxtie Green' contributed to the Norrington Newsletter Number 8, Spring issue 1978 'Portrait Gallery No. III Walter Norrington 1853-1912' with anecdotes and information on the Norringtons which included the following:

'Walter Norrington, my husband's grandfather, had 15 or 16 children and used to boast he gave each one a thrashing every day of the week and two for Sunday. Walter's wife [Elizabeth Judd #1294] was a sweet person and there is still a lady at Coxtie Green, now 86 years of age, who can remember going to the Red Lion as a very little girl for 2 penny worth of whisky. She always took a pint jug and Mrs Norrington always filled the jug until one day Walter saw her and asked how much she paid. Being too young to know this was not the correct price, she told him 2d. and he was so cross he knocked Mrs Norrington down. I think this was the end of the two penny worth of whiskey.'

A further extract reads:

'From documentary sources we can add some facts and dates to Yvonne's vivid picture.

'In 1851 Walter's father, John Norrington [#1299] who was 23 years old, was working as a farm labourer and living with a George Collis at South Ockenden, Essex, and next year was married to Louisa Spelter [#1356 Louisa Spiller]. Water was their first child and was born early in 1853, the year before the outbreak of the Crimean War. A second son, John [#1666] was born on 12th January, 1855, and when adult he became an engine driver, an occupation now considered glamorous and even at that time much coveted. John senior may never have seen his third son for he died late in 1856 which was probably shortly before William [#1667] was born. William became a sawyer and lived at Stifford but we think may have emigrated after marrying Sarah Mayes [#3682]. For three and a half years Louisa brought up her three sons single handed and then in 1860 she married again to James Mears [#1665], a farm labourer like her late husband, and the three boys were then presented with a half-sister, Mary [#3683].

'When Walter was 23 he married Elizabeth Judd [#1294] and when their son, Harry [#1302] was born on 7th December 1885 he informed the Registrar that his occupation was a carman. Perhaps waggoner is a description better understood to-day as his grandson, Harry [#3680], recalls tales of his journeys to London with wagons loaded with hay in which he slept overnight under cover of a barn. Ten years later he had taken on the more responsible job of farm bailiff but by 1908 he had become a publican and this continued to be his livelihood until his death in 1912 at the age of 59. Elizabeth outlived him by twenty years. Their child were .............. Many of their children and grandchildren still live in this part of Essex and could point out the Red Lion at Coxtie Green although it is no longer a licenced house and the chestnut tree which once grew outside has gone along with the inn sign.25'

He was recorded by Mrs Yvonne Norrington [#3681,] whose husband was 'Harry Norrington [#3680], eldest son of Harry Norrington [#1302], who was son of Walter Norrington of the Red Lion, Coxtie Green' in a contribution to the Norrington Newsletter Number 8, Spring issue 1978 'Portrait Gallery No.

Being too young to known this was not the correct price, she told him 2d. and he was so cross he knocked Mrs Norrington down. I think this was the end of the two penny worth of whiskey'

A further extract reads:

'From documenary souces we can add some facts and dates to Yvonne's vivid picture.

'In 1851 Walter's father, John Norrington [#1299] who was 23 years old, was working as a farm labourer and living with a George Collis at South Ockended, Essex, and next year was married to Louisa Spelter [#1356 Louisa Spiller].

Their child were ... Many of their children and grandchildren still live in this part of Essex and could point out the Red Lion at Coxtie Green although it is no longer a licenced house and the chestnut tree which once grew outside has gone along with the inn sign.16'

Adelaide Norrington
Essex, England
'Dressed to serve in the bard of the Red Lion'
c 1899

(By kind permission of
Judith Webb)
Her married name was Dodd.2 Adelaide Norrington also went by the name of Kitty.3,2 She was born on 5 March 1881 at South Ockendon, Essex, England; and her birth was recorded in the June quarter 1881 at Orsett Registration district.1,2,4,5 She was the daughter of Walter Norrington and Elizabeth Judd.1 Adelaide Norrington appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at Mill Cottage, South Ockendon, Essex, England, as Daughter, age 1 month, born South Ockendon, Essex.1 She was baptized on 17 April 1881 at St Giles and All Saints, Orsett, Essex, England.6 She appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 3 Dennis Corner, North Ockendon, Essex, England, as Daughter, age 10, birthplace South Ockendon, and she was a Scholar.7 She was not necessarily in service unlike several of 'the Norrington girls [who] went into service when they reached 14 and many of them moved away from Essex with the families they worked for' circa 1896.8,9 She was photographed 'aged 18 dressed to serve in the bar of The Red Lion' circa 1899.2 She married George Dodd, son of Charles Dodd and Rebecca Wheal, on 5 October 1901 at Dartford Registry Office, Dartford, Kent, England; and their marriage was recorded in the December quarter 1901 at Dartford Registration district.2,10,11 Adelaide Norrington and George Dodd lived at Mill Road, Northumberland Heath, Erith, Kent, England; and one of their Granddaughters says 'there is reference in Norah’s [daughter] writing that Adelaide and George lived there in Erith after their marriage and whilst George worked in Woolwich, Adelaide had shops in Bexleyheath'.12,13

Adelaide Norrington and George Dodd lived between 7 October 1906 and 22 December 1907 at 5 Northumberland Park, Northumberland Heath, Erith, Kent, England; when Hilda Ivy and George Arthur Dodd were baptised.14 Adelaide Norrington and George Dodd were photographed outside Adelaide's shop in 1909; Kitty is on the left with a neighbour. Their Granddaughter provides the following commentry:

'Grandma’s first shop

'My maternal grandmother, Adelaide (Kitty) Dodd, loved the shopkeeper’s way of life, having served in the bar of her father’s public house in Essex until her marriage in 1901. Her baby son George (pictured) was the second born of her six children, my mother, Norah May, being number five. Adelaide, her husband and two children lived in Erith whilst running this shop in Bexleyheath, Kent, South East London- a couple of miles from Erith. They lived a comfortable life and went on to own another shop in Bexleyheath in 1912. By the time my mother was born (1919) the family owned a fruit and vegetable shop in Colney Rd in Dartford, Kent and lived in the accommodation above and behind the shop.

'R. White was obviously a great brand name of the day and still going strong in 2009- this lemonade is still my favourite – 100 years on. I’m not sure Oatmeal Stout would be quite so popular now, though it sounds nutritious.

'According to my mother, Adelaide apparently had a 17“waist measurement, so was probably not tempted to the sweets in the jars on show in the window. I also remember sweets displayed in screw top jars like those in the picture – 50 years ago! Judith Webb.15'

Adelaide Norrington appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at 1 Mayplace Road West, Bexleyheath, Kent, England, as Wife, age 30, birthplace Ockenden, Essex, and she was a Business Assistant; she had had three children born alive and all were still living.16 She and George Dodd lived on 23 April 1911 at 1 Mayplace, Bexleyheath, Kent, England; when Kittie Irene Dodd was baptised.14 Adelaide Norrington appeared on the census of 19 June 1921 at Dartford, Kent, England, as born at Essex, in 1881.17 She and George Dodd lived in 1937 at 4 Oakfield Place, Dartford, Kent, England; where they were on the Electoral Register with daughter Dorothy Adelaide Mewett and husband Frank Mewett.18 Adelaide Norrington and George Dodd lived on 29 September 1939 at Dartford, Kent, England; where they were on the Electoral Register and he was a 'Gas Surface Layer, Heavy Worker.19' Adelaide Norrington and George Dodd were photographed on their '60th Wedding Anniversary' in October 1961.2 Adelaide Norrington died in 1965 at Kent, England; and her death was recorded at Dartford Registration district in the December quarter 1965.20

Florence, Arthur & Arthur V
Arthur Norrington was born on 3 November 1882 at Essex, England; and his birth was recorded in the December quarter 1882 at Orsett Registration district.1,2,3,4,5 He was the son of Walter Norrington and Elizabeth Judd.1 Arthur Norrington was baptized on 8 December 1882 at St Nicholas, South Ockendon, Essex, England.6,7 He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 3 Dennis Corner, North Ockendon, Essex, England, as Son, age 8, birthplace South Ockendon, and he was a Scholar.8 He was photographed in Romford 'as a young man' circa 1900.2 He married Florence Dayton, daughter of John Dayton and Louisa Purney, on 14 May 1907 at All Saints, Fulham, London, England; and their marriage, after Banns were read, was recorded in the June quarter 1907 at Fulham Registration district. Arthur was age 24, a Bachelor of 387 New King's Road, Fulham, Cellarman and Son of Walter Norrington, Publican. 'Old Norrington Store, Main St., Milton, c.1911-12 (next and west of present Biway). Florence Norrington, Arthur Norrington, Victor Norrington (small boy) - young lady believed to be a Clement girl'. However 'Don Norrington writes further that the woman at the side of the picture was probably Eva Dayton (Florence Norrington's sister) who was living with them at the time of the 1911 census. Also living there was a man named Edward Champion...17,18'

This was followed by a description and picture in the same paper on 23 May 1957. On 29 May 1957 the Georgetown Herald also carried a similar item.22 Arthur Norrington and Florence Dayton a notice was published in the Canadian Champion (Milton, ON) celebrating their forthcoming 50th Wedding Anniversary on 9 May 1957.23 Arthur Norrington died on 23 April 1961 at Dundas, West Flamborough, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, at age 78; at age 78 and a notice appeared in the Georgetown Herald and the Canadian Champion (Milton) four days later.13,9,24,25 He was buried after 23 April 1961 at Grove Cemetery, Flamborough West, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada.26,27 He was the subject of an obituary in the Canadian Champion (Milton) on 4 May 1961 with a further item of news in the Georgetown Herald of 11 May 1961.28 He was

'[Arthur] Victor Norrington of Toronto, Canada' was the author of 'a fascinating account of his father's life' which appeared in the 'Norrington Family Newsletter Number 7, Autumn issue 1977', from which the following is extracted:

' As related to his three sons, Victor [#1650], Walter [#1663], and Eric [#1664]. Arthur's early life in the county of Essex in England had been hard, perhaps unrewarding. Due in some respects to being one of a large family by today's standards, his education was rudimentary and elementary. His early years were possibly years of early rising, chores, strict discipline of the cane followed by apprenticeship as a baker and apparently, at the time of his marriage to Florence Dayton [#1649] in 1907 and almost immediate emigration, he was employed in a public house. The environment did or did not, as one cares to assess it, influence his life long attitude toward alcoholic beverages. He was never known to accept so much as a drop of alcohol, even as a toast or social drink - a hard bitten teetotaller in the strictest sense of the word. As far as is known no other member of his family ever emigrated and neither he nor his wife ever had the pleasure of a trip back to his homeland.

'Briefly, his years in Canada were spent in this manner. Initial work was on a farm as a "couple", a great deal of dawn to dusk work for very little salary. I believe I heard them say $20 a month and board for the two of them. This was near the town of Milton in Hilton County, Province of Ontario at a hamlet called Omagh. They soon moved into Milton were Arthur worked for Blaine and Hannent, grocery merchants. His next venture was as proprietor of a candy store and ice cream parlour. There had been a fire a few doors away and the writer's first involvement, which could really not be termed "firstmemory", was with a toy wheel-barrow and shovel helping his dad clear the rubble preparatory to the building of a new two storey brick store and dwelling into which the business was moved.

'Arthur and Florences' three sons were born in the years 1909, '15 and '17 and they also raised a nephew on his wife's side of the family, from Fulham, sent out to Canada, aged 12. This would take them from 1907 to about 1915 when Arthur's tendency to roam began. After a short sojourn in a neighbouring town, Streetsville, as a grocer and the arrival of the second son they moved to the big city of Toronto where he worked in a munitions factory. Before the end of World War I they moved again to the town of Georgetown, possibly twelve miles from their first home in Milton, once again in the confectionary and ice-cream business, as Manager. Later on they purchased the store, welcomed a third son and carried on the business until the year 1930. His main hobbies probably lawn bowling, chicken raising, a fairly ardent interest in masonry and frequent holiday trips via passenger boat on the Great Lakes. In 1930 an ill advised decision was made to sell out and invest in a small grapefruit farm in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. By 1933 the Great Depression ruined them financially so they returned penniless to Ontario, Canada. My cousin and I, (we had remained in Canada) rescued them at the Canadian boarder "dead broke", my dad and mother and two brokers in a beat up "rumble seat" Chrysler.

'The following years were no doubt a severe struggle to make a living as a confectioner once again in the town of Dundas near Hamilton. Adversity was accepted with some grace but little or no wealth until for health reasons Arthur and Florence gave up active business, retiring first of all to their son's farm and finally to their own little apartment in Dundas. A very kind and considerate father he was, mellowed and uncomplaining about the whims of fate.11'
