Subject: Higginbotham - Wright Families Date: Thu, 15 Nov 2001
I am trying to sort out my great great grandmother, Corilla
Rebecca Higginbotham. My great great grandmother was a
Higginbotham from Louisiana.
I don't have a lot of dates, but I have a few family names.
The following is transcribed from a handwritten document from my
great uncle Carter Russell Lee (son of Mose L. Lee and Corilla
Rebecca Higginbotham):
"These people were associated with my mother (Corilla Rebecca
Higginbotham)
during the years before her marriage.
The Zay Wright Family consisting of Uncle Zay, his wife Aunt
Molly Higginbotham Wright, daughter Minnie, Mary Lou and Sadie.
Will Wright family: Uncle Will, his wife, Aunt Hattie McClain
Wright, children, Gilmer, and (twins) Doc and Will and 3 or 4
daughters.
Carter Lamer Higginbotham, his wife, Grandma Cassie Wright
Higginbotham and my mother, Corilla Rebecca Higginbotham, the
only child.
My mothers' father (Carter Lamar) died when Corilla was about
two years old.
My Grandmother Higginbotham formerly a Wright ( sister of Zay
and Will Wright) sent Mama (Corilla) over to live with Uncle
Will Wright, when Corilla was around 3 or 4. Somewhat latter
Grandma Cassie remarried again to a Mr. Henry (last name) and
she bore him a daughter, Lola. Lola was some 7 or 8 years
younger than Mama, her half sister. In the mean time my
Grandmother somewhere along the line (new Mrs. Henry) had tried
to get my mother to come & live with them but the Will Wrights
refused to give her up for they needed her to look after the
twins and do the housework. My mother's mother died just before
her second child was due, by Henry.
Will Wright was married to Hattie McClain. They had three sons:
Gilmer, and twins - Doc and Will. They also had 3 or 4
daughters.
Uncle Will Wright was a good man but his wife ruled the roost.
Mama was getting no schooling so Uncle Zay took her to his
house, so as he put it, she could learn to write her name. When
Mama was 18 she married into the Lee family, then considered a
prominent business man from the Carolina's."
(This was written by my great uncle Carter Russell Lee, Sr.)
Corilla Rebecca Higginbotham married Mose Lynwood Lee. They had
four children:
Carter Russell Lee (Sr.) born May 1900 married Ina Sleigh
Wilma Ray Lee (my grandmother) born 25 July 1901 Rogilliville in
West Feliciana Parish married Robert Joseph Duvernet
Clarence Orrin "Buddy" Lee born 1904 married unknown
Willamae Lee born 1906 died 1994 married Clyde Torry
Mose Lynwood Lee was the son of Thomas Jefferson Lee and Mary
Newton. They had many children, but I don't have any of their
names.
This orbit was sent to me by a kind person from the Lee Boards,
A. Blocking.
"I have a copy of Mose L Lee obit I got out of the 1954 Baton
Rouge Advocate. It states "Died at 9:50 am today at his
residence, 418 Government.Aged of 82. Native of East Feliciana
Parish. Came to Baton Rouge in 1917. Retired from Esso Standard
Oil in 1937 after 20 years service. Funeral Services to be at
Welsh Funeral Parlors at 2pm Sunday. Burial in Roselawn Memorial
Park. Survivors include his widow, the former Corilla
Higginbotham of EFel: two daughters, Mrs. J R Duvernet and Mrs.
C E Torry; six grandchildren. 11 great-grandchildren and
numerous nephews and nieces."
I believe Mose is a gggreat uncle whose parents were Thomas
Jefferson Lee and Mary Catherine Newton. I have him born in 1869
in the Felicia's."
My grandmother Wilma Ray married Joseph Robert "Bobby" Duvernet
(born 17 April 1898 New Roads, LA and died 21 Jan 1965 New Road)
They had a house on Main Street in Baton Rouge, LA. Do these
Higginbotham's match yours from LA? Any help would be
appreciated.
