per Bob Burton in Missouri: "According to Francis Burton
Harrison, who wrote "The Burton Chronicles" in 1933, The Henrico
County, VA. Burtons (John of Longfield, Thomas of Cobbs, the
Stovalls, Hatchers, etc.) ARE NOT related to the Burtons of
Orange County VA (May Burton, et.al.). Both had large families
that migrated westward to Kentucky, Missouri and beyond. They
also used several of the same given names for their children,
which has made research a challenge.
May Burton Sr. (son of John Burton of Caroline County VA) was
the earliest Burton in Orange Co. The name of May has been used
in every generation of this family for 200 years! You will not
find the name May used with the Henrico Co. Burtons. May Sr. was
born around 1722 and married Hannah Medley. They had several
children including a son named James who married Mary White in
1779. James Sr. and Mary had a son, James Jr. who married
Catherine Goodridge in 1815. I would be more than happy to share
information with anyone researching the Orange County Burtons
There is at least two Burton families that started in Virginia
and possibly more. They may have been related, but the evidence
is not available. (It was probably destroyed during the War
Between The States)."
