ROGER fitzMaurice de HEREFORD Lord of Sufton

1137 - ABT 1223

ID Number: I48133

  • OCCUPATION: Sheriff of Herefordshire 1182
  • RESIDENCE: Sufton Court, Herefordshire, ENG
  • BIRTH: 1137, Sufton Court, Herefordshire, England
  • DEATH: ABT 1223, Herefordshire, England
  • BURIAL: England
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1670] [S1713]
Father: MAURICE de HEREFORD Lord of Sufton

Family 1 : AUBREY
  1. +HENRY de HEREFORD Lord of Sufton, Knt.
  2.  NICHOLAS de HEREFORD of Sufton, Knt.
  3.  ELIAS de HEREFORD of Sufton
  4.  WILLIAM de HEREFORD of Sufton
  5.  JULIANA de HEREFORD of Sufton

Notes

"Of Sufton-in-Mordiford, co. Hereford, who is entered in the Testa de Nevill as holding land there in 1243, granted leases of lands in Mordiford 1243 and 1251. By his wife Aubrey (mentioned in deed dated 1280) he had issue (with a dau., Julian, wife of John de Hogeruel) a son and heir, Sir Henry de Hereford of Sufton. Born the 7th Year of Henry III of England."

"The remarkable thing about Roger fitz Maurice was that although he was a priest, and pursued a vigorous ecclesiastical career, he was also a prominent layman and had an equally successful secular career. He also married and had at least one son, or so I think. The earliest record I have found of him comes in about 1155-58 when he witnessed a deed of Bishop Gilbert Foliot."

"He associated with Bishop Gilbert Foliot who it is believed arranged his education for the priesthood occurring after his marriage. Roger had the Church of the Holy Rood in Mordiford come into his ownership, probably because he succeeded his father as Lord of Sufton and because, like his father he had the sub-tenancy of Mordiford under Ferrers of Tutbury. sometime in the years before his death in 1205 Roger was named a Canon of Hereford Cathedral, during the reign of King John, the king that brought about the Magna Carta in June 1215. Roger also acquired the lands of Larport which remain a part of the Sufton Estate as of 2001."

CONFLICT: researchers indicate he had these five sons and one daughter recorded. However, the dates don't match up as some were born after Roger's death?

ABT 1827 - ____

ID Number: I96112

  • RESIDENCE: Taylor Co. GA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1827
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3001]

Notes

McCants and McCrarys Author: William Nash, Jr. Date: 3 Aug 2000

Classification: Bible
I recently purchased a home built in 1845 by Jonathan Bartley McCrary. It is on Hwy 80 in Geneva. His brother, William McCrary built an identical home one mile north of his home. My research, so far, indicates that he was related to the McCants. So far I know that J.B. McCrary was in the civil war for the duration; he returned home and was buried here. I am looking for his relatives and any information at all. I thought that since you had this page that you might know something. Thanks.

Bartlett McCrary Author: John Adams Date: 3 Aug 2000 Surnames: McCrary, McCants
Classification: Bible
Bartlett McCrary, son of John McCrary and Jenny McCrary, was born about 1827 and married Sarah A. Tabitha McCants December 7, 1854 in Taylor Co., Ga.

She was daughter of Jeremiah Creelman McCants and Tabitha McCrary McCants.
I am not sure if Bartlett McCrary's first name was Jonathan. Bartlett McCrary's brother, Gillah Freeny McCrary, had a son name Jonathan Bartlett McCrary and William Henry McCrary.
Bartlett McCrary had a brother name Henry McCrary. You have to keep the birth days in mind to keep them all separated. John Adams
