Charles William BOCAGE

ABT 1850 - ____

ID Number: I25348

  • OCCUPATION: Civil Engineer
  • RESIDENCE: Jefferson Co. Pine Bluff, AR
  • BIRTH: ABT 1850
  • RESOURCES: See: [S787]
Father: Joseph William BOCAGE C.S.A.

Notes

Charles William Bocage. Charles William Bocage is a civil engineer and at nineteen he had completed two divisions on the Texas and St. Louis railroad, and a division in Illinois on the Toledo, Texas, and Rio Grande railroad. He is probably the youngest civil engineer in our country, ever intrusted at that age with a division of his own.

                                                                _______________________

Re: John Murphy McCants - Evergreen, AL
Author: Mary Ella McCants Long Date: 23 Nov 2002
Classification: Query
I had an Uncle named John Murphy McCants, an exact copy of my father Claude MCCants both born in Evergreen, Alabama. Had a Sister named Ethel McCants that lived in Las Cruces, New Mexice but is deceased.

Their Father's name is John Bishop McCants, Mother Mary Ellar Nancy Lee McCants, Brothers Leslie McCants(deceased). Another sister Lillie Bell McCants(New Orleans), Albertine McCants(Walker) deceased, Jeanette, Voncille, Frances were all his siblings. If we're talking about the same person John Murphy McCants is/was my uncle. All were born in Evergreen Alabama; Jeanette is still alive and aunt Frances.

Harriet Lee was John Murphy's grandmother on his Mom's side, Tom Lee was his grandfather on his Mom's side. He had an uncle named uncle Harl Lee. Aunt Dosha.

Most of the older ancsetors are buried in Evergreen Cemetaries. We had a family reunion last year in Evergreen in fact. We have reunions every other year so the next one will be in 2004.

Notes

"Married Eleanor. Jeremiah Strother was a freeholder in Westmoreland Co. as early as 1703, as appears by a purchase from J. W. Smith; and subsequently a planter in King George Co. when that county was formed from Westmoreland, where he resided until probably as late as I736, when he moved to Orange Co.(now Culpeper). Here he died in 1741. His will dated June 7, 1740, was prob. March 26, I74I, and recorded in Orange Co. WB 1-14I; devised all property to wife Elener (sic) for life or widowhood, and after her marriage or death to son Christopher, special legacies to sons James, William, Francis, Jeremiah, and Lawrence, and daus. Catharine and EIizabeth; exers: sons James and William; wits: John Catlett, Francis Slaughter, Wm. Lightfoot. His wife was Eleanor who survived him. He is said to have died at the age of 86 but it is nowhere shown whether this age is taken from deposition, Bible or Wills. It is very probable that Eleanor may have been a second wife if he died at that age.

1740 DEED: Orange Co, VA, DB 5-149, 7 Apr, Jeremiah Strother wit.

1741 WILL: Orange Co, VA, WB I-141. Written 7 Jun 1740, Jeremiah Strother lists wife Elener; sons as James, William, Jeremiah, Francis, Lawrence, and Christopher; daus Catherine and Elizabeth; mother's rights to Christopher; exers: sons James and William."
Ref: Historical Southern Families, by Boddie and Owen, William Strother in VA, 1898, pp. 6-7.

(I) Jeremiah Strother was a son of William Strother, the first of the name and founder of the American family, and who is supposed to have emigrated from Northumberland, England (date and particulars unknown). He settled on the Rappahannock river, near Port Conway, now in Prince George county. His name first appears July 12, 1763, when he came into court in old Rappahannock county, to designate the mark of his cattle. (II) James Strother was a son of Jeremiah, and died in Orange (now Culpeper) county, Virginia, in 1741. (III) French Strother was a son of James and Margaret (French) Strother.
