Notes

From: [email protected] sent by Scott Williams [email protected] Missouri Division SCV, Date: Tuesday, February 08, 2000 Subject: Please help this Cemetery: I am the feature writer for the Buchanan County News and while doing a series on the area towns in counties we serve, I discovered a cemetery in deplorable shape that has a Confederate marker in it. The white marble monument is inscribed with "Erected to the memory of the Confederate soldiers by their friends" and the following names are on it:
Alarine Hardin, Richard Alvis, Jasper Clements, Jessie Myles, Robert McCormac and Andrew Smith. It was dedicated November 1, 1871, and I have read that it is the oldest Confederate monument west of the Mississippi.

The fallen were under the command of Thornton and were about 400 strong. They were camped in a field north of what is now Camden Point. They were the victims of a surprise attack by the Union coming from Weston and led by Ford and Jennison.

The fallen soldiers were buried where they died and later moved to the old cemetery north of Camden Point. The attack happened July 13, 1863. A woman, who has family in this cemetery has tried with very little success to clean the area up. The cemetery is full of weeds, brambles, fallen stones and years of neglect.
Since there is a historical monument here, I was hoping that this would help with the restoration of the cemetery. My only connection with this cemetery is an interest in historic preservation and the respect of our ancestors. I hope you can guide me in the right direction for help on this project. Thank you, Barb Lemley
