Overview of the Coney Family Line: English Ancestry of John
Coney.
There are Pedigrees and Arms of Coney of Kirton, ENG. Families
of Lincolnshire, ENG date back to 1256 and Norfolk, ENG
families of much later origin. Lincolnshire ENG is the only
shire in ENG in which a sufficient number of Coneys reside to
bring the name within the classification made by Mr. Henry
Brougham Guppy, who in 1890, wrote "Homes of Family Names in
Great Britain" and lists 8 farmers carrying Coney among ten
thousand yeomen of Lincolnshire. In the church of Frampton,
where the arms appear on a memorial window. And the arms also
appear at Framton Old Hall, ENG.

I Have been working on and Have an Extensive tree for the
northern branch of the Coney Family. We have all known about a
branch that went to / lived in Georgia but had lost touch with
them over the last generation or so. I have not located the link
yet but evidence points to the Coney's in your Database. I will
try to make the link. When I do I Will contact you and give you
what I have at that point. My congradulations on your site and
tree. I know just how many headaches are involved in both.
Please feel free to contact me if you have questions, have any
information to offer, or just want to yack about the Northern
Branch of the Coney Tree.

Subject: Fwd: Coneys
From: The Woodville Republican, Wilkinson Co., MS 29 Sep 1827
(MS State Archives Microfilm 2218-19). Natchez, 20 Sept. We
have learned that a party of people from Alexandria, LA arrived
here for the avowed purpose of fighting a duel and that, on
Wednesday, a duel took place with shots fired, but no one hurt,
and that the dispute was then amicably settled.
However, we are told that as the group prepared to leave the
ground near the Miss. River where they had duelled, they were
assailed by another group, and afer acrimony on both sides, a
savage battle commenced which left Maj. Norris Wright and Gen. -
- - - CUNEY [or Coney?] dead. Mr. - - -Bowie and Mr. Alfred
Blanchard both received serious wounds.

I doubt there is any connection between the CONEY family and our
Couey family for the following reason(s).
NOTE #1: The CONEY family was ALREADY SETTLED in the colony of
North
Carolina BEFORE our Couey family arrived in the American
Colonies. [i.e.
Births for Coney people in N.C. already in 1767......Our FIRST
Couey family
[Ship's list had the name as Cooey] (W. Couey, wife Jane/Janet
and 3 sons, (John, William Jr. and Joseph) ages 13, 12, and 3,
did not arrive in the colonies until the end of August in 1767.
[Aug. 31, 1767 to be exact, is the date the family arrived in
the Port of Charleston. Along with the family was Samuel Couey,
a single, unmarried man whom we believe to be a brother to
William Sr. We know from the land bounty records that none of
them settled in N.C., but Abbéville S.C. in the community of
Long Canes.
NOTE # 2. Three Couey family bibles have surfaced to date, one
of them belonging to Joseph Couey, a Revolutionary War veteran.
In all of them the family name is clearly written as C-o-u-e-y.
There were no Jeremiahs, no Ezekiels, etc., listed in any of the
family bibles, nor were was anyone listed as born in N.C.
NOTE # 3. If any of our Couey family went to N.C. it would have
been many years later. The 1790 census [transcribed as Covey by
the transcriber(s)] shows the brothers still residing in
Abbéville. [Note: Documents dealing with land that they executed
as adults show the family name as Couey as well.]
NOTE # 4. None of the CONEY family members "fit" in any of the
Couey lines, of which there can be only four. [Three lines from
the sons who were all born in Europe and arrived with their
parents in the port of Charleston in Aug. of 1767 and the fourth
line from their Uncle Samuel Couey who was a single, unmarried
man when they arrived.
NOTE # 5. I have an extensive list of the males from all 4 Couey
branches from the colonial period to the Civil War era and
there is no Jeremiah, Charles or Ezekiel among them.
NOTE # 6. Coney people have indicated their N.C. Coneys moved
to Pulaski County Ga and Lee County, GA. Our Couey people, born
in S.C., first settled in Gwinnett Co. GA (Joseph and his
children primarily) and Floyd Counties, later moving into other
areas, including Alabama. {I searched among all these and could
not find any connection either.)
