Reigned as King of England from 1199 to 1216. Signed the Magna Carta in 1215 at Runnymead. His reign saw renewal of the war with Phillip II Augustus of France to whom he has lost several continental possesions including Normandy by 1205. He came into conflict with his own Barons and was forced to sing the Magna Carta. His later repudiation of the charter led to the first barons war in 1215 to 1217 during which John died. Was named King of Ireland in 1177, Count of Mortain in 1189 and was the Earl of Gloucester. Ascended to the throne at Westminster Abbey on 27 May 1199.
John was born at
Oxford, England, on 24 December 1167. He was the son of
King of England Henry II Curtmantle FitzEmpress and
Eleanor of Aquitaine (?). He married
Isabella of Gloucester de Clare Countess at
Wiltshire, England, on 29 August 1189. King of England John I Lackland (?) and
Isabella of Gloucester de Clare Countess were divorced in 1199; John divorced Isabella on the grounds of consanguinity, her grandfather Robert being an illegitimate son of Henry I. He married
Isabella of Angoulême (?) Queen of England at
Bordeaux, France, on 24 August 1200. John died on 19 October 1216 at
Newark, Nottinghamshire, England, at age 48. His body was interred in October 1216 at
England.
