Notes

aka: Brian, Briant, Briand, Bryant.
During the early period of the emigration to America members of the Briand family spelled the name differently as Bryan, Briand, Brian, Briant, and about 1740 this branch of the family spelled the name Bryant.

The progentitor of this branch James (Jacques Briand) Bryant was born in Manakintown about 1709 of french Huguenot descent. His father Jaques Briand emigrated from England to Virginia before 1700 and settled at Manakintown about 1703. James, Jr was a large land and slave owner, member of the Court and Secretary of King William Parish. His home was located on Jones Creek near the mouth of Dutoy Creek in Powhatan County Virginia. He owned lands near Midlothian, Chesterfield County, Virginia and during the Revolutionary War, coal was mined from these lands. James was highly respected and an influencial citizen of this section of Virginia.

"HISTORY OF THE HUGUENOT EMIGRATION TO AMERICA" (Appleton's item #6914GP). This work is so thorough that there are few Huguenot names for which some new fact or illustration is not supplied. There is a profusion of genealogical detail on the early Huguenot families of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Virginia, later families having dispersed to Pennsylvania and other states.
