Notes

Tom Bonner served during the Revolutionary War in Roebuck's South Carolina regiment mustered around Newberry county in the old Ninety-six District in the western frontier of the state. He was granted about 300 acres (in two sections) for his service. He sold the tracts for 160 pounds sterling and moved to Georgia in 1787. He bought 181 acres of oak and hickory land on Powell's Creek on November 13, 1788 that later became Taliferro County (created out of territory of the original county of Greene in 1825). Tom acquired an additional 200 acres in July of 1792 adjoining his original tract. He transferred title to 650 acres in Jackson Co. to his oldest son Zadock Bonner in December 1801.

Also found in Pruitt: "Book B p 3-7 Dec 4, 1785 Thomas Bonner (Spartanburg) to Vardrey McBee (same); power of attorney to convey 2 tracts of land to William Tate esq in fee simple; first tract 150 ac and second tract 144 ac; land is on Cherokee Cr and S side of Broad R; both were granted Thomas Bonner. Witness Wm Tate sr, Thomas Camp, and William Tate. Signed Thomas Bonner.

The Bonners settled in a military reservation in the southern part was set up between the Oconee and Appalachee rivers. The Appalachee River marked the boundary for white settlements with the Creek Indians living on the other side of the river. The Indians frequently crossed the river, ran off the cattle, burned houses and raided the countryside which reached its height from 1786 to 1788 and was termed the "Oconee War." There is no doubt that Tom was busy defending his family and fighting the Indians. The Dukes and the Vanderfords were neighbors having accompanied the Bonners from North Carolina to Greene County and then to Clarke Co., Georgia. Nearly all of the Bonners identified with the history of Carroll Co. Georgia are descended from this Thomas Bonner.

Re: Unknown father of Thomas. I have a xerox copy of a Deed of Trust, 25 Mar 1780, Chowan, NC, between Thomas Bonner and his wife, Margaret and Richard Hoskins. Names daughters Elizabeth and Deborah (apparently later known as Nancy, according to Mr. Curry in his "Bonners of Chowan County.." book) and Thomas' brother, Richard, dec'd, and gave proof that Thomas' father was Henry Bonner and widow Elizabeth who married William Roberts after Henry's death.
