Notes

Judge Philip Barbour was a member of the Virginia Assembly in 1812, and elected to Congress in 1814. Chosen speaker of the house in 1821. Appointed a judge of the General Court of Va., and in 1836, accepted the appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, by President Andrew Jackson. He held this position until his death.

BARBOUR, Philip Pendleton, (brother of James Barbour and cousin of John Strode Barbour), a Representative from Virginia; born at “Frascati,” near Gordonsville, Orange County, Va., May 25, 1783; attended common and private schools; was graduated from the college of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Va., in 1799; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1800 and commenced practice in Bardstown, Ky.; returned to Virginia in 1801 and practiced law in Gordonsville, Orange County; member of the State house of delegates 1812-1814; elected as a Republican to the Thirteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John Dawson; reelected to the Fourteenth and to the four succeeding Congresses and served from September 19, 1814, to March 3, 1825; Speaker of the House of Representatives (Seventeenth Congress); was not a candidate for renomination in 1824; offered the professorship of law in the University of Virginia in 1825, but declined; appointed a judge of the general court of Virginia and served for two years, resigning in 1827; elected to the Twentieth Congress and reelected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-first Congress and served from March 4, 1827, until his resignation on October 15, 1830; chairman, Committee on the Judiciary (Twentieth Congress); president of the Virginia constitutional convention in 1829; appointed by President Jackson, June 1, 1830, judge of the United States Circuit Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, declining the chancellorship and the post of attorney general; refused nominations for judge of the court of appeals, for Governor, and for United States Senator; appointed Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court and served from March 15, 1836, until his death in Washington, D.C., February 25, 1841; interment in Congressional Cemetery.

"Philip Pendleton Barbour((4)) (Thomas((3)), James((2)), James((1))) was a brother of Governor James Barbour; married a sister of his wife, Frances Todd Johnson, and earned equal distinction with his distinguished brother, b. May 25, 1783; was a member of the Virginia Assembly in 1812. In 1814 was elected to Congress, and continued therein until 1825, and was chosen Speaker of the House in 1821. He was a lawyer of great distinction; was offered the professorship of law at the University of Virginia by Mr. Jefferson, but declined it, and was appointed a Judge of the General Court of Virginia. In 1827 he resigned, and was reelected to Congress without opposition. In 1829 he, together with ex-President Madison, represented Orange County, Va., in the Constitutional Convention of that year, and on the death of ex-President Monroe, succeeded him as president of that distinguished body. In 1830 he was appointed U. S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Virginia. He declined the post of Attorney-General, and refused nominations for a seat on the Court of Appeals of Virginia, for the gubernatorial chair, and the Senate of the United States, but in 1836 accepted an appointment as a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, and held this position until his death in 1842. "Will" for Richard Chandler dated 1781-82 proved 7 Feb.1782 wife Elizabeth Carter. And witt.on this Will was Silvanus Bryant. And in Richard Chandler's inventory done by Silvanus Bryant & William Martin dated 1782. This Richard Chandler & Eliz. son Richard Carter Chandler b. abt 1770's, marr.1798 Albemarle Co.Va. And moved to Kanawha Co.Va (1863WV) abt 1812.

Charles LEWIS'; by the old path, up the Byrd Creek, and crossing Dog Creek; 2109 acres, part formerly granted to John THORNTON and sold to MARTIN, 20 L, 10 shillings."
"Deed, Goochland Co., VA, 27 Sept., 1729, John MARTIN of New Kent Co., 400 acres (new land), Goochland, on N. side the Rivanna River, on his own land, for 40 shillings."
"Deed, Albemarle Co., 13 May, 1762, Henry CRUMPTON, alias MARTIN, to Andrew HARRISON, Goochland, for 120 L, 180 acres N. fork of James R., adj. Rivanna, part of a tract under the will of John MARTIN, late of New Kent, to wife of CRUMPTON and Silvanus BRYANT; will of 16 Dec., 1741, New Kent Co."
The land mentioned was in Henrico/Goochland, later Albemarle, and later Fluvanna Counties.
