Father: Arthur HOPKINS M.D. Mother: Elizabeth PETTUS |
Captain Arthur Hopkins, who settled in the northwestern part of
the country, was a son of Dr. Arthur Hopkins of New Kent and
Goochland Counties. Dr. Hopkins was born in 1690 and took a
degree in medicine from Edinburgh, Scotland; he was justice,
sheriff, vestryman and colonel of Goochland. He died in 1765
and by his wife Elizabeth Pettus had issue: Samuel, John,
Captain Arthur, of Pittsylvania, James, Lucy, wife of George
Robinson of Pittsylvania, Mary, wife of Col. Joseph Cabell, and
Elizabeth, the wife of John Smith of the Pocket.
Captain Arthur Hopkins, married Judith Jefferson, daughter of
Peterfield Jefferson, and had issue, among others James Hopkins,
who inherited his father's home and had issue, Reuben, who
married successively Frances and Polly Carter, daughters of
Jesse Carter of "Oakland," and Judge Arthur Francis Hopkins,
born Oct. 18, 1794, in Pittsylvania graduated in law at Chapel
Hill N. C., and became the first judge of the Superior Court of
Alabama.
There were resident lawyers who practiced before the early court
of Pittsylvania, men of culture, ability and wealth, among whom
were Colonel Haynes Morgan, Captain Hugh Innes, Gideon Marr,
Robert Williams and William Todd. But Patrick Henry's
exceptional powers were everywhere recognized and his opinions
were like a court of last appeal. In 1770 Mr. John Smith, of
"The Pocket" wrote to his brother-in-law, Captain Arthur
HOPKINS26 also of Pittsylvania, who was preparing to take a trip
down county: "Tell Mr. Henry I have long expected his opinion on
the affair I wrote to him, but have never heard once from zzz
[p.99] him, tho' the person I wrote by told me he promised to
write me an answer in a short time. If he will send it by you,
his fee for his Opinion I will send by Mr. Lynch, Burgess for
Bedford, next month." Src: Pittsylvania County, Virginia History
