Second Generation

Mary Veronica COULTER

Jeremiah SCANNELL  ( Michael , Jeremiah )
Jeremiah was born on Sunday 26th January 1896 in Brown Street, Broken Hill, New South Wales.
Jeremiah was the 4th of  9 children , 3 boys and 6 girls for  Anne O'CONNOR and Michael SCANNELL.

Jeremiah's birth was registered nearly 21 months later, on 14th October 1897 by his father, using a statutory declaration.
Michael was aged 33 years, a "Miner" and born in County Kerry, Ireland.
Anne was aged 30 years and also born in County Kerry, Ireland.
The declaration also included the date and place of their marriage and the birth dates of Jeremiah's 3 older siblings. ~s01, s02

*Jeremiah's birthday, the 26th of January has evolved to become "Australia Day",
the day most Australians commemorate the "founding" of the Australian Colonies.

Jeremiah was known to family and friends as  "Alex".

Alex's siblings were  Kate (b1890),  Polly (b1891),  Dan (b1894),  Joe (b1898),  Anne (b1891),  Phil (b1902),  Eileen (b1904) and  Monica (b1906).

Jeremiah attended the local Catholic school with his siblings.
Jeremiah won a "bursary" to continue his education.  He wanted to be a school teacher, like his older sister Polly.
Jeremiah had to wait, because his "sisters had to go first".

Jeremiah became a carpenter.  He was an apprentice to his uncle, Micky POWER.
He formed some sort of partnership with his uncle "Jack" Mallon.
They built many of the timber bridges around the district.

This work is most probably what took Jeremiah to White Cliffs, New South Wales.

Mary Veronica COULTER  ( Robert Thomas , Robert , Thomas , Reuben )
Mary was born on Wednesday 14th October 1896 in Wilcannia, New South Wales.
Mary was the youngest of  9 children , 4 boys and 5 girls for  Ellen Christina O'CONNELL and Robert Thomas COULTER.

Mary's birth was registered on 29th December 1896 by her father, Robert making a statutory declaration.
Robert's address was Victoria Hotel, Mount Browne Road.
Robert was a Hotel Keeper, aged 34 years, born in Bullock Creek, Victoria.
Ellen O'CONNELL~SMITH~COULTER was aged 38 years and born in Sandhurst, Victoria.
Mary's older siblings were Robert T 11yrs, William H 10yrs, Catherine 9yrs, John G 8yrs, Florence M 6yrs and Walter I 5yrs.
There was also "1 female dead". `s01

Mary seems to have lived at the Victoria Hotel, Mount Browne Road till about 4 years of age.
The family seems to have moved to White Cliffs about 1901.

Mary grew up in White Cliffs, New South Wales.

Jeremiah SCANNELL married Mary Veronica COULTER
on Wednesday 19th December 1917
in White Cliffs, New South Wales.

They were married in the Roman Catholic Church.  Jeremiah and Mary were both aged 21 years. ~s01

Jeremiah and Mary had the following children :

1 M John Alexander SCANNELL  was born on 8th June 1918 in Broken Hill, New South Wales.
2 M Walter M SCANNELL  was born about May 1919 in Broken Hill, New South Wales.
Walter died on about 3rd October 1919 in Broken Hill, New South Wales.
Walter was  buried on 5th October 1919 in the Broken Hill Cemetery.  Walter was aged 5 months. ~s11
3 M Ronald Thomas SCANNELL  was born on 13th December 1920 in Broken Hill, New South Wales.
4 F Mavis Irene SCANNELL  was born on 30th January 1923 in Broken Hill, New South Wales.
5 F Marie Claire SCANNELL  was born on 2nd May 1924 in Broken Hill, New South Wales.
6 F Ellen Bethle SCANNELL  was born 29th October 1925 in Broken Hill, New South Wales.
7 F Margaret Joy SCANNELL  was born on 27th May 1928 in Broken Hill, New South Wales.

Jeremiah SCANNELL  died on Monday 17th May 1948 in hospital, in Broken Hill, New South Wales.
Jeremiah died from head injuries received on Saturday 15th May.
Jeremiah was buried on Tuesday 18th May 1948 in the Broken Hill Cemetery.  Jeremiah was aged 52 years. ~s01, s11

Mary Veronica SCANNELL nee COULTER  died on Saturday 22nd January 1977 in the Royal Adelaide Hospital, South Australia.
Mary's cause of death was "congestive cardiac failure".
Mary was buried on Wednesday 26th January 1977 in the Broken Hill Cemetery.  Mary was aged 80 years. ~s01, s11

Jeremiah and Mary are buried together.  Their grave  is in the Catholic Section, CATH-M, grave 196.
They are buried with thier infant son Walter, and thier grandaughter, Julie Ann DOUGLAS. ~s11
