Note | WILLIAM HOWEY (1790-1882) OF DELAWARE TOWNSHIP, PA William Howey was born in 1790 in Delaware (now Lehman) Township, Northampton County, PA. He was the son of Boudwyn Howey, a Revolutionary War soldier and a long time resident of early Delaware Township; and the grandson of John Howey, who, in 1738, became one of the early settlers to occupy land along the Big Bushkill in the Pennsylvania Colony. In about 1810 William married Catherine VanWhy, daughter of Henry VanWhy of Middle Smithfield Township. They had two sons--Bowdoine, born about 1810 and Simon, born about 1812. The 1830 census for William's household also includes a young female, age 20-30. It is quite likely that this is BowdoineÙus first wife, Mary. In the history of the region, William first appears by name in 1814 on a list of taxable residents of Delaware Township in the newly formed Pike County. This list also includes his brother, Robert, and his cousin, John. In 1815, Catherine Howy stood as witness at the baptism of Mariah (Mary) Howy, dau of John and Mary Howy. We believe that Catherine was WilliamÙus wife. In 1832 William, along with his cousin John, acquired joint ownership of a specific 90+ acre tract of land in Lehman Township. Although the record date of the Deed is 1832, it is likely that William and John occupied this land in1830, perhaps earlier. This tract was previously owned by Robert, WilliamÙus brother, by Bowdewin, WilliamÙus father, and may be the same land that WilliamÙus grandfather, the immigrant John Howay, obtained by Warrant in 1738. From 1830 to about 1845 William and John lived on this land, raising families and probably engaged in subsistence farming. The 1840 census lists 7 Howey households in one place in Pike County, Lehman Twp. The area probably acquired the name ÙSHoweytownÙT at this time. Then, in 1846 William sold exactly half (surveyed) of the property to John for consideration of $1.00. We believe this was done in order to establish separate ownership of the jointly owned property, preparatory to WilliamÙus move to adjoining Middle Smithfield in Monroe County. The records reveal possible reasons for this move. 1) William's wife, Catherine, may have died in the 1840's. She appears in the 1840 census but not in the 1850 census. 2) In the late 1840's, William's son, Bowdoine moved with his family to Wilkes Barre in Luzerne County. 3) In the early 1850's WilliamÙus son, Simon, moved his family to Luzerne County. In about 1853 William sold the Monroe County land he had purchased after leaving the 90+ acre tract, and moved to Luzerne County where, in 1860, he appears in the farm household of his son, Bowdoine. William died 15 April, 1882 and is buried in City Cemetery in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania along with his sons, Bowdoine and Simon, and Simon's wife, Jane Heater.July 7, 2007 CHRONOLOGY OF APPEARANCES OF WILLIAM HOWEY IN PA 1790 - Born in PA. Census records show thatWilliam was born about 1790 in then Delaware Township,Northampton County. He last appears in the 1860 census livingwith his son, Bowdoine, in Newport Township, Luzerne County. Asearch of subsequent censuses found no other William Howey whocould plausibly be the subject of this record, (2) Date of birth indicates that this is Bowdoine Howey whomoved his family from Pike/Lehman to Luzerne/Wilkes Barre in thelate 1840's. In the 1880 census he is listed as B. Howey.3 | |
