in 1778 bringing first wagon to this section, and
built first Presbyterian Church "Salem" same year.

There is no inscription on the lower portion of the one on the west side. These new stones enclose the old limestone momument erected in 1812, or some time soon after his death. The War Department by letter of 13 Sep 1937 turned down the request of E. Spears McCollough that the grave be marked John Hugh Kirkpatrick but rather chose John Kirkpatrick as that was how he served. The Knoxville News-Sentinel of Thurs, 15 Sep 1938 previewed the dedication to take place the following Sun, the 18th.
Other descendants expected to attend were 6 year old Sallie Wilson (great-great-great-great granddaughter, who resides with her grandfather, J.B.M. Kirkpatrick of Kirkwood Street in Burlington); Roger William Kirkpatrick, Jonesboro Attorney, to speak; Mrs. Mary E. Reed of Huntington Beach, CA; Mrs. Josephine A. Fleming, Lexington, KY; Miss Mattie Kirkpatrick, Asheville; and Frank Kirkpatrick, St. Louis.

1760-1763, Lancaster Co, PA, Orphan's Court, 1 Feb 1763, p. 222, Petition of John Kirkpatrick, intermarried with Jane Wilkins, daughter of John Wilkins, decd, asked the court to divide equally the tract of 300 acres in Donegal TWP, DB C-321 of 19 Dec 1751. John Wilson and Andrew Mays of Lancaster Co, guardian over, Mary, Rachel, John, and Jennet Wilkins, minors of John Wilkins, decd, for 125 pounds paid by Gordon Howard and wife, Rachel, administrator of John Wilkins, decd, acknowledged being settled as whole of respective shares of said four children of late father, John Wilkins, including appraisement of improvements on west side of Susquehanna River which said Rachel before her marriage to Gordon took a patent and sold, record 3 Mar 1752.

It interesting to note that Rebecca and her purported husband Thomas Anderson are not named in this suit. They are listed with the others in a deed of 1761 where the sibling girls and their spouses, except Jennet, sell a 283 acre tract to brother John Wilkins. Noticeably missing from this deed is a release from their mother, Rachel Howard, Lancaster Co, PA, DB N-104, 5 May 1761. Some have taken this deed with an apparent single Jennet as proof that the birthdates provided by E. Spears McCollough for her children are incorrect for at least her first three children. If they are correct, Jennet could have been a second wife. A possible case is that these are not the same two families. In all the orphan records listed above none have Rebecca and often speak of four children, not five, If this is true then we do not know the husbands of Rachel and Mary.

VITALS: Kirkpatrick Family Tree;1700-1938;By Samuel Kirkpatrick, 1938, Jonesboro, TN; Article by E. Spears McCollough, Knoxville, TN, Jan 1939 (Copy held by compiler). One version has John being born in Ireland and another in Scotland with a far reaching pedigree. McCollough issued a correction on 27 Jun 1959 in order that there may not be any misunderstanding concerning the ancestral line of John Kirkpatrick of East Tennessee as outlined and brought into being by Gen. Elbert Kirkpatrick, of McKinney, TX, who employed reputable genealogists in Washington, D.C.; John L. Sawyer of Bellefontaine, OH, Kirkpatrick genealogist and publisher of the American Register for a number of years; Supreme Court Judge Samuel Kirkpatrick of Jonesboro, TN, and his son, Samuel Kirkpatrick, Attorney, of the same address, and it has been developed by subsequent research during the past eight months that the data, etc., used by the aforementioned parties was not correct in every respect and has been proven so by the infomation published in Dr. Wm. Henry Egle's NOTES AND QUERIES, Annual Volume 1899, p. 60. His version of the ancestry is as listed in this compilation which in turn is being questioned as some think their John died young in PA and is buried in the same plot as father, William. (John A. McDonald, 4506 Edgewood Street, Wichita Falls, TX, on 21 Apr 1964, based on info from Prentiss Price and E. Spears McCollough from Kirkpatrick Bible Records.) The compiler knows of no one who has seen these Bible records. Some have stated that it is strange that no marriage or death records are given for the children. This doesn't bother me as much as not having the marriage of the parents.

MIL: John resided in Botetourt Co, Va, and Watauga District, NC, during the Revolutionary War according to DAR paper. DAR Patriot Index, Centennial Edition, Part II;Rev. War ;DAR ;1697; #294419. Revolutionary Army Accounts; 1783; Vol I, Page 37, Folio 2, State of North Carolina State Archives; John Kirkpatrick was paid 19 pounds, 12, shillings, 6 pence on October 27, 1783. John Kirkpatrick listed as born in Scotland 1741, died 1812 in TN, wife Jane Wilkins. Listed as private NC. The birth place is in question but may be correct since McCullough's version is now in jeopardy.

Hawkins County TN Cemeteries Vol 2; 1800-?; Hawkins County Genealogy Society 1986, p. 375. John Kirkpatrick was buried in Bent Creek Cemetery near Whitesburg, Hamblen,TN. The NSSAR Revolutionary War Graves Register has the same burial site, birth in 1741, death in 1812. His wife was listed as Margaret Jane Wilkins. His service was in the NC militia as a Private.

Note* Robert Wilkins, from Brecknockshire, Wales, the original settler of the family, established himself in Pennsylvania before 1700, perhaps in 1694;and somewhat later is said to have married Elizabeth Ross, and to havedied in Virginia. John Wilkins wrote that his grandfather, a native of Wales in Great Britain, came early unto this; he landed in Pennsylvania, then a wilderness; he took up and settled a tract of land where the city of Philadelphia now stands; after living there some time he sold his title thereof for a beaver hat; then took up and improved the tract of land where the sign of the Buck now is, ten miles from Philadelphia on the Lancaster Road. He sold out there and moved further up, taking the course of what is now called Hawes ferry, taking up and settling tract after tract, until he settled a tract about fourteen miles northward of where Lancaster now stands; there he lived some time; then he left that tract to my father; he moved on, settling several tracts, until he settled on a tract where Carlisle now stands. Gave that tract to another of his sons, then moved on in the old way toward Patomick and died in Virginia.'--- Autobiography, 1807. All from Genealogies of Pennsylvania Families, Vol. III, pp. 277-278. Peter W Coldham in his Complete Book of Emigrants 1661-1699, p. 526, had Robert Wilkins convicted with others before Chief Justice Jeffries at the court of of Oyer and Terminer for Dorset, Somerset and Devon for waging war against the King and sentenced to be transported to the Americas which was enrolled on 4 Feb 1691. Town of Marietta, Lancaster Co, PA, was laid out on one of his tracts.
