Birth between 1650 and 1660  Thomas Rice was born between 1650 and 1660 at Shirementon Bristol, England.2
He was the son of Stephen Rice
Marriage between 1680 and 1685  Thomas Rice married Ann Marcy Hewes between 1680 and 1685.3
Death 1711  Thomas Rice died in 1711 at ship crossing the Atlantic back to England.4
Note   From memoirs of DAvid Rice, Thomas' grandson: (from Paul Rice book)

In the later part of his life, he owned a small plantation in the lower part of what is now hanover Co. VA. Here he left his wife, nine sons and three daughters and returned to England to receive a considerable estate which had been left to him, but returned no more. The sailors reported that he died at sea. It is supposed that he was assassinated. No return was ever made of the property after which he had gone.."

From Paul Rice posting to RICE-L: THomas came to Virginia aboard the Bristol Merchant in 1679 or 1680. He was assigned apprentice to John Stephens in UK before leaving on the shhip. John Stephens was the captain.

posting by Norma RIce Gertzman at RICE-L 9/1/1999
Thomas RIce...was English by birth but of Welsh extraction. His family in Wales bore coat-of-arms. Deeds in the Rice family are marked with their coat of arms. Shield divided quarterly, 1st per pale indented, 2nd lion rampant 3 and 4 are mutilated. In a deed of Rebecca Rice, the 3rd reveals a lion rampant. Creswt: crown surmounting a leopard's face (as in Burke). Motte: FIDES NON TIMET. At one time the widow of John Holt Rice (II) Anne Smith Morton owned a copy of the above-mentioned coat of arms. Another copy belonged to the widow of Izard Bacon Rice.

Father Edmund Swinney
Pedigree

Last Edited 11 Apr 2004

Birth between 1765 and 1767  Benjamin Swinney was born between 1765 and 1767.
He was the son of Edmund Swinney
Marriage circa 1785  Benjamin Swinney married Elizabeth ? circa 1785.1
Death 1823  Benjamin Swinney died in 1823 at Franklin County, VA.1
Note   Why I think Benjamin is probably the son of Edmund: They both lived on Nicholas Creek in Franklin County, so they were bound to be relatives. Benjamin was born around 1765, according to his census age. Edmund was old enought to be exempt from tithe in 1796 in Prince Edward County, so he had to be considerably older than Benjamin. If not a father, he could have been an uncle. I have not been able to find any records linking them together except the proximity of their addresses.
Note   Benjamin is listed as a minister in Wingfields list of Franklin Co ministers.2
Fact 1 9 January 1805  On 9 January 1805, at Franklin County, VA,, Benjamin Sweeney bought from Richard Jones 77 acres on "branches of Nicholas Creek" adjoining Carter, Hale, Jesse Jones and Vest..3
Census 1810  Benjamin Swinney appeared on the census of 1810 at Franklin County, VA, as follows: 02110-00110.4
Census 1820  Benjamin Swinney appeared on the census of 1820 at Franklin County, VA, as follows: 001201-10011.5
Will 7 November 1823  Benjamin Swinney left a will on 7 November 1823 at Franklin County, VA. Benjamin Sweeney's will is on line at ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/franklin/wills/sweeney2.txt. Heirs named are wife Elizabeth, Joel and Jonathan Sweeney, Rebecca Moore the wife of William Moore, and Ann Sweeney. The will was presented for probate on January 5, 1824.1

[It is possible that the "1859" is a transcription error, since Sept 9, 1855 is the date of the other document. Also Nancy Gambill was 90 in the 1850 census of Ashe Co, NC, which would make it 1855 if she was 95.]
