"Lived on the French Broad River, now Marshall, the county seat of Madison County, but then a part of Buncombe County. The members of the David Vance family moved from Reems Creek, about fourteen miles north of Asheville, where they lived when Zebulon Baird Vance was born, to Lapland before 1836 and acquired about 1,500 acres of land. There they remained until about 1850 when, David Vance having died, Mira Margaret Vance and her seven children moved to Asheville."
