Thornton, Sterling and Ann Cary, Nov. 30, 1769. p. 227
Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly
Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly • volume XXX • volume XXX, number 1 01-FEB-1992)
Oct 28, 1791 - Petition of John Seawell and Francis Thornton show that Sterling Thornton, lately deceased, by his will and testament did give his only son, John, his whole estate. However, if his son John died under the age of 21 without a child living at his death, Sterling Thornton decreed, the entire estate be divided between the petitioners and a certain Matt Cole ine the following manner. One-eighth part to the said Matt Cole; Three-eighths among the children of John Seawell by name of John, Sterling and Francis Seawell; The other four-eighths between children of Francis Thornton by name of James, Elizabeth, Ann and Francis.

The petition further shows that John Thornton, son of Sterling, was deceased by Dec 1790, under the age, without a child, unmarried. Also one of the children of Francis Thornton, Elizabeth died Nov 1790, underage, without child, and unmarried. They ask that the lands in this estate be sold and the money divided appropriately.

Article XXVII. By giving a list of the old vestrymen we shall see who were the most prominent persons in Church matters. Mr. Carraway mentions them as the "Dudleys, Armisteads, Carys, Tabbs, Gwynns, Billops, Throckmortons, and Sir John Peyton,"--the latter being the patriot of the Revolution as well as the Churchman.

Old Churches, Ministers, and Families of Virginia.Article XXVII. Kingston Parish, Mathews County. This was originally one of the parishes in Gloucester. There are loose leaves of an old vestry-book, going back to the year 1677, the first of which leaves do not indicate how much older the book was. It was called the parish in North River precinct. It has a peculiarity distinguishing it from all other parishes. With the vestrymen, who were generally very few, there met a larger number of the inhabitants, who seem to have managed the affairs of the parish in conjunction.
