Jean MAROT "the Immigrant"

5 Jul 1676 - ABT Nov 1717

ID Number: I44149

  • OCCUPATION: French Huguenot (to Va. 1700), innkeeper and secretary of William Byrd II
  • RESIDENCE: France and Williamsburg, VA
  • BIRTH: 5 Jul 1676, Meurtheetmoselle, Viterne, France
  • DEATH: ABT Nov 1717, murdered by Francis Sharpe in Williamsburg, York Co. VA
  • RESOURCES: See: LDS (AFN: FSJ5-0F) CONFLICT Notes [S273]

Family 1 : Anne PASTEUR
  1. +Hannah MAROT
  2. +Edith MAROT
  3. +Anne MAROT

Notes

Father: Jacque MAROT (AFN: FSJ5-44) Mother: Anne (AFN: FSJ5-59)
CONFLICT: All the children of Jean & Anne Pasteur listed have birth dates before he was born.

From "Irish Settlers in America," by Michael J. O'Brien, Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1979: "Timothy Sullivan lived at Williamsburg, York County, where in 1718 he married Anne the widow of Jean Marot, who came to Virginia in the Huguenot emigration of 1700. After his death in 1717, Marot left a large estate, and the records indicate that Sullivan came into possession of the property on his marriage to the widow. Marot kept a tavern at Williamsburg, and one of his daughters married first the grammar master at William and Mary College, and, after his death, she married James Shields of York County."

From "Shields Family," William and Mary Quarterly, Genealogies of Virginia Families, vol. II, p. 430, FTM CD#186, VA Genealogies #2,: "Jean Marot came to Virginia in the Huhuenot emigration in 1700. (Va. Hist. Soc. Coll., Vol. V, p. 24) He was in 1704 secretary of Col. William Byrd at Westover, and was then 27 years old. The next year he obtained a license to keep ordinary at Williamsburg. He married Anne ------- , and his will was proved in York County Court in 1717, his inventory showing a large estate. His will shows that he had issue:\ 2, Edith; 3, Anne; 4, Rachel. His widow, Anne, married Timothy Sullivant. Jean Marot was killed by one Francis Sharpe."

From "Booker Family, Booker-Marot," William and Mary Quarterly, Genealogies of Virginia Families, vol. 1, p. 172, FTM CD187, VA Genealogies #3: "Clement Marot, in the 16th century, voiced the spirit in verse of the Huguenots, and his hymns were very popular. One of the family named, Jean Marot, came to Virginia in 1700 and in 1704 was in the employment of William Byrd, of Westover, probably as secretary. He was then 27 years old. The next year he settled in Williamsburg, where he obtained a license to keep ordinary. He made his will August 31, 1717, which was proved in York County December 16, 1717. His death appears to have been brought about by the violence of one Francis Sharpe, who was arrested and remanded to the public jail at Williamsburg November 18, 1717, for the murder of John Marot. He left a considerable personal estate valued at 904 pounds."
