Mrs. Mehitable Colby

McHenry Plaindealer: Another of the early settlers of McHenry county has passed away. Mrs. Mehitable E. Colby, who has lived in this county since 1840, died Saturday, June 7, 1902. She was born March 26, 1828. Was a member of one of the leading families of the community, that of Abijah and Thankful Smith. Only three of her eleven brothers and sisters surviver her, viz: Mrs. Abigail Colby, Crystal Lake; Mrs. Almira Brown, McHenry, and Mrs. Harriett Snyder, Hartford, Conn. These were all present at the funeral.

In 1834 she was united in maarriage to Page Colby, who now in old age is left to mourn the loss of a faithful and loving companion. Of her six children four now remain. Mrs. Ida I. Stevens and Mrs. Ellen A. Gage had preceded her to the life beyond. Those remaining are Chas. C. Colby, Mary J. Ford, George W. Colby and Willard E. Colby.

Mrs. Colby lived a retired and quiet life, but made her presence felt for good, nor only in her own family, but in her unselfish manner blessed many who incidentally came in contact with her life. In her home her kindness, love and devotion to the family were very manifest until the last, and only a few hours before the end came she expressed her sympathy for her husband and comforted him with the assurance that "the separation would only be for a short time." How true it is, although years it may be may pass, they are but short. To some in contact with such a choice spirit as this is to be made better by its association.

The funeral was conducted from the house, Monday, June 9, 1902, by Rev. W. B. Lauck of the M. E. church in the presence of a large company of relatives and friends, and her remains were laid to rest in the McHenry cemetery.

She has Ancestral File Number D22P-ZM.
