Census: 1850 in Macon Co. Dist 21, AL; 1860 in Walker Co. AL;
1880 in Marion Co., Beat 13, AL; in 1910 in Henderson Co. TX and
1920 in Henderson Co., Murchison, TX.
1st AL Union Army: Alvis, William J., Pvt., Corp., Co. B, EN
4/2/64, Decatur, AL for 3 yrs., MI 4/13/64 in Decatur, born
Tuscaloosa Co., AL, age 21, farmer, MO 10/20/65 Huntsville.
"The First Alabama Cavalry, US Volunteers, from 1863 until the
end. The First was a tough, hard-riding, hard-fighting bunch of
Loyalist Southerners who rode with Sherman and who had a
reputation as burners. They torched Barnwell, SC to the ground,
in spite of Gen. Kilpatrick's attempts to stop them, because it
was a "nest of filthy Rebels that needs burning."
Enlisted 2 Apr 1864 in 1st AL Cav, 21 yrs old, having lived in
Jasper, Walker Co. AL for the past 15 yrs. 5 ft 11 in, light
hair, grey eyes, fair complexion; promoted to corporal 1 Aug
1864 was discharged 25 Sep 1864 in Rome, GA, but stayed on with
the army doing "army service".
At the end of Mar 1865, in Durham Station, NC he turned his
horse over to the Quartermaster McWorkman of the 1st AL Cav. no
voucher was asked for or given when he made a claim for same in
1873 it was not allowed; "The kind of Army Service being
rendered is not apparent, and the witness Smith has a similar
claim for two horses which is disallowed and the claiment Alvis
is the witness for him. The probabilities are all against this
being a just claim."
Conflicting stories arise here concerning Billy's service:
Military papers show Union, home in August, discharged in
October. A descendant says: Confederate, home in August,
returned to the Union. No word was received because he had
changed sides. He later received a pension for his service in
the Union. He gave his discharge papers to a Mr. Granger, a
claim agent, for the purpose of getting his bounty, but never
heard another word.
Copy from NARA: William John Alvis was conscripted and mustered
into the 13rh AL Partisan Rangers, Co. A on Sep 6, 1862 at
Jasper, AL for the duration of war. He deserted and enlisted in
the 1st AL Cav at Decatur, AL on 2 Apr 1864 and mustered into
service at Decatur on Apr 13, 1864 and served in Co. B. He was
promoted Corporal, Aug 1, 1864. He was aditted to 20th Army
Corps, Army of the Cumberland hospital at Savannah, GA for
remittent fever on Jan 18, 1865, sent to the USA General
Hospital at Savannah on Feb 1, 1865 and returned to duty on Feb
28, 1865. He was admitted to the USA Post Hospital (thomas
Barracks) at Huntsville on Oct 11, 1865 for typhoid and returned
to duty 20 Oct 1865. He mustered out of service on Oct 20, 1865
at Huntsville, AL. His physical description was grey eyes,
light hair, fair complexion, 5 ft 11 in tall. William J. Alvis
drew a pension as an invalid based on his service in the First
AL Cav, beginning on June 10, 1886 according to the General
Index to Pension Files, 1861-1934, Union. His brother, Franklin
N. Alvis, his uncles, Henry Alvis and Gabriel Alvis and cousin
David H. Alvis also served in the 1st AL Cav.
