ID Number: I63498

  • TITLE: Dr.
  • OCCUPATION: C.S.A. Orphan Brigade," Co. C, 4th KY Infantry

  • BIRTH: 21 Feb 1841, Larue Co. Kentucky
  • DEATH: 8 Jul 1919, Brace, Tennessee

Father: Andrew GOFF
Mother: Zerilda Jane Bourbon WILLIN

Family 1 : Hannah Elizabeth KESSINGER

Notes

"During Civil War, he was a member of the Confederate Army's famous "Orphan Brigade," in Co. C, 4th KY Infantry. He enlisted August 29, 1861 at Camp Burnett, TN and served entire war. He fought at Shiloh (6-7 Apr '62), Vicksburg (Defense Jun-Jul '62), Baton Rouge (5 Aug '62), Murfreesboro (1 Dec '62 -2 Jan '63), Jackson, MS (Defense mid Jul '63), Chickamauga (20 Sep '63), Missioniary Ridge (25 Nov '63) Rocky Face Ridge (Feb or May '64), and Dallas, GA (28 May '64). He was captured at Kennesaw Mtn., GA on 16 Jun 1864 and remained a prisoner until end of Civil War.

After the war he moved to live at Goff, Kentucky (Grayson-Edmonson Co. border) where he practiced medicine. Father of nine children. Moved to Brace, TN with sons Boliver & Horatio when Boliver Goff's oldest daughter, Maude Goff Alexander, was 13. She was born in 1891, so he left KY about 1904. In 1981, Maude was living in Brace, TN. Mattie Meredith Vincent, daughter of Rance and Fannie Meredith visited there in 1981-bringing dates from the cemetery.

Dr. William Henry Goff and Judgment Day

It seems that Dr. Goff was a very religious man, who never missed a good church service and often sought out traveling tent revivals for divine inspiration. Now, one such traveling preacher, of the hellfire and brimstone variety, preached to his audience and told them that the world was going to come to an end on a particular day. Dr. Goff took the sermon to heart and made his preparations to meet his maker. On the day of reckoning, Dr. William Henry and his son, William Bolivar, crawled up into a haystack to wait for the end of the world to come.

Some time early that morning, a local prankster found them there, sleeping like babies. Not one to pass up an opportunity, it is said that the anonymous joker set the haystack on fire. Dr. Goff was awakened abruptly, and seeing the fire yelled, "Bollivar! Bollivar! Wake up! The end of the world has come, and we're in Hell, just as I expected." This story is often told in the family. I don't know if it is true, but it is certainly entertaining." ----Bill Vincent
children:
i. William Bolivar (1865-1952)
ii. Joseph Anderson (1868-1936)
iii. Josephine "Josie" (1870-1957)

"Came from White Run, KY, near Hodgensville. The Sinking Creek farm of Robert Lincoln's was owned by his sister Mary Goff Davenport. (See Ivy Davenport at Lincoln's Birthplace for information on the ownership of the property.) At Elizabethtown, a man by the name of Judge Hodges can give information about William Henry Goff's sister. Her name could be Mecia Raysdale? He had another sister, Aunt Bur, an old maid, who lived with William Henry."
