Col. William Perkins left a will dated June 3, 1806, witnessed
by Henry Bell, A. Dibrell, and Joseph Duncan, which was probated
at a Circuit Court held for Buckingham County, July 14, 1806. A
copy was found and re-recorded on Aug. 13, 1873, p. 203
Buckingham Will Bk. 1. The following is an abstract: My wife to
enjoy possession of the land and plantation whereon I
live, with all my personal estate except the legacies herein
after bequeathed, and after her death all personal estate not
hereinafter bequeathed to be equally divided amongst all my sons
and daughters, or their survivors, and the lands sold and the
money arising therefrom to be equally divided amongst all my
sons and daughters or their survivors.
To daughter Susanna, a negro woman.
To daughter Polly Perkins, a negro woman and boy.
To daughter Elizabeth, a negro girl and boy.
To daughter Nancy, a negro girl and boy.
To daughter Mildred (under 16), a negro girl and boy.
To son Thomas. To son Samuel. To son George. My lands in
Kentucky held by William Hansford and myself to be sold, etc.,
by son William H. Perkins 150 pounds which I owe him for
services rendered me heretofore.
Executors: Arthur Moseley, George perkins, William H. Perkins
and Thomas F. Perkins."
Served as ensign at Williamsburg, Virginia, 2 Oct 1775; Captain
24th Regiment of Militia of Virginia 1775; lieutenant colonel 3
May 1785.
Lived 7 miles west of Buckingham Court House, VA, a tax list
said 500 acres on Meredith Creek. It said that his father owned
land 5 miles west of the Courthouse.
In 1788 he was a trustee for the town of Greensville; in 1790 he
was one of a commission regarding the Slate River; in 1791 he
was a trustee of the Warminster Academy and also that year was a
trustee for establishing a town on the property of John Horsley
in Buckingham called Diuguidsville. In 1792 he was a high
sheriff for Buckingham and in 1793 he was acting justice.

From "Descendants of Nicholas Perkins of Virginia", Wm. Hall:
page 74-76 "William Perkins was born in 1740 possibly in
Albemarle Co., Va., but more likely in Henrico or Goochland
Counties. He died June 6, 1806, Buckingham Co., Va. He married
Dec. 12, 1770, Buckingham Co., Va., Elizabeth Lee Fearn
(daughter of John Fearn and Leanna Lee), born Aug. 18, 1750,
died Sept. 19, 1839.
In the W. R. Perkins papers in the Virginia Historical Society
in Richmond, Va, is the statement: Mrs. James Roland Kyle had
talks with Mrs. Wiliam A. Horseley who died in 1907
aged 87 who said that William Perkins, Jr., who became Col.
William Perkins was the son of William Perkins son of
Constantine Perkins. He was born 1740 and married December 12,
1770, Elizabeth Lee Fearn in Buckingham and died June 5, 1806.
This data Mrs. Horseley had from talks in her teens with the
widow of Col. Perkins who died at an advanced age in 1839.
In 1782 William Perkins paid real estate taxes on 500 acres of
land on Meredith Creek, 7 miles west of the Courthouse, on which
was his residence. On May 4, 1787, he patented 92 acres of land
in Buckingham County adjoining his own lands and those of Col.
Joseph Cabell.
On June 22, 1787, William Perkins patented 142 acres in
Buckingham adjoining the lands of James Smith and Josiah Jones.
All three of his tracts were annotated "7 miles west of
Courthouse." This indicates that his land was quite close to
that of his father whose land lay "5 miles west of Courthouse".
William Perkins was an officer in the Continental Army, being
commissioned ensign of a company of militia from Buckingham
County, Oct. 2, 1776, then captain, then Lieutenant-colonel,
commandant of the Twenty-Fourth Regiment of Buckingham militia
on May 13, 1794. "Historical Register of Virginians in the
Revolution" by John H. Gwalthmey, 1938, lists him as: William
Harding Perkins, Colonel Va. Militia 1777-1781. In all other
records he s listed without a middle name and Gwalthmey may be
in error in listing him as William Harding Perkins. On p. 26
"Virginia Militia in the Revolutionary War" by J. T. McAllister,
1913, it states, in a section about Buckingham County, that
Capt. William Perkins' company was in the Battle of Hot Water
and Jamestown.
His commission as lieutenant-colonel has been preserved in the
family papers and "an exact copy of the original made September
22, 1897, Lynchburg, Virginia, by Mildred Cabell Easley" reads:
The Commonweath of Virginia
To William Perkins, Jr. Gentleman:
KNOW YOU, that from the special trust and confidence reposed in
your fidelity courage, activity and good conduct and upon the
recommendation of the court of the county of Buckingham, our
Lieutenant Governor (in the absence of the Governor) pursuant to
the act for regulating the Militia of this Commonwealth, doth
appoint you the said William Perkins, junoir, Lieutenant Colonel
Commandant of the twenty-fourth regiment of the said militia, to
take rank as such, agreeably, to the number hereof.
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF these our letters are sealed with the seal
of the Commonwealth and made patent.
WITNESS James Wood, esquire, our said Lieutenant-Governor at
Richmond, this 13th day of May, 1794.
(REGISTERED) Sam. Coleman, James Wood
William Perkins took an active part in the affairs of Buckingham
County as is shown by the references to him in Hening's
Statutes. In 1788 he was a trustee for the town of Greensville;
in 1790 he was one of a commission to examine Slate River; in
1791 he was a trustee of the Warminster Academy; in 1791 he was
one of the trustees for establishing a town on the property of
John Horseley in Buckingham called Diuguidsville. In 1792 he was
high sheriff
of Buckingham, and in 1793 he was acting justice."
