Location of Old Hedgepeth Homestead

Janice Ragan was given this information by Nellie Sue (Lorren) HULSEY:

Grandpa Hedgepeth (1.1 Charles Frank HEDGEPETH) moved from J'ville to Hedgepeth Mountain....at Knighten's Crossroads.
Arlene Waters gave this information about the Hedgepeth homestead:
I know where the original homestead once stood.  Some people that I know live on the property.  I found out by accident one day while we were talking that their property was once called the Hedgepeth place.  They pointed to an area below where their house sat and said that the Hedgepeth house used to be "down there".  Of course, now there is nothing there, not even a chimney.  Above their ouse on a hill area are what is left of two unmarked graves.  No one knows who is in them, but I have suspected that Louisa, child of William and Louisa Hedgepeth may be one of them.  I can not find anything on her other than on the 1860 census where she is about 9 years old. Old records previously put in the the Paulding Library about 20 to 25 years ago stated that the graves were of children....The homeplace was located in the part of Paulding County that once was Cobb County and is still very close to the current Cobb/Paulding line.  There are not many books published on Cobb County so I have discovered nothing in that area.   There may be land records of where William first came by the land. (NOTE:  See land deed
dated January 31, 1895 as this may be the land Arlene is referring to as Hedgepeth Mountain)  His neighbors were
the PARIS family and the RAINWATER family.  Their oldest daughter, Sarah Ann Hedgepeth, is my ancestor.  She married
Joseph RAINWATER.  Joseph was 19 when he died in the Civil War but he left two children behind, William RAINWATER and Louisa RAINWATER.  Sarah never remarried and lived with her parents for many years.  She is later found living with her daughter who married Jay WEST and moved to Rockmart, Georgia.  William RAINWATER died at the age of 19 and left two small children, one of which was my grandmother Kate
RAINWATER.
Arlene gave the following directions to the Old Hedgepeth place:
Take Hwy 278 east (this road cuts the county in half by running from the west to the east side) until it intersects with Hwy 92 at a
busy intersection with a Wal-Mart on the right side and a K-Mart shopping center on the left.  Take a left at this intersection, which will be going North on Hwy 92.  You will cross over Hwy 360, better known as Macland Rd.  Not hardly a mile up the road you will see a Church sign that says Mt. Vernon Church.  It's a small sign, turn right at this sign.  The land that the church and graveyard sit on was donated by the Rainwater family, as I am told.  This is a small country road and you have to go all the way to the other end; just before you get to the other end where it dead ends into another road is where the Hedgepeths lived.  I think they probably owned what is now on both sides of the road, but the house was located on the left hand side if you follow these directions.  A tax digest of Paulding County says that William Hedgepeth owned 119 acres in 1874 and 151 acres in 1876 (NOTE: in 1895, William owned 160 acres).
Note:  Kenny Hedgepeth at <[email protected]> wrote regarding
land deeds of William Hedgepeth, his son Charles Frank
Hedgepeth, and Knighten Crossroads the following:
"William's property Sec. 13 Twp. 13-S Range 11-E, Huntsville
Meridian, Cleburne Co., Alabama

I entered Cleburne County in to the search box at topozone.com and got
this link

http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=16&n=3751331&e=644606&size=l&loc=Cleburne+County

the area of William's property is east, the other side of Piedmont from
Charles .... going towards Polk and Harrison Counties in Georgia ... Now
from Borden Springs count three squares over to the right [east], then three
squares down [south] ... you should see a red " X " in that box ... that's Sec.
13 .... the red line above Borden Springs is the dividing line between Twp.
12-S and 13-S ... the red line on the right [east] side of Sec. 13 is the
dividing line between Range 11-E and 12-E ....

Now for that one ... I have no idea of where to direct you to go, to find the
maps ? you may have to call around to some of the small towns near by it."
....

Kenny stated the following in reference to property owned by Charles
Frank Hedgepeth found at Bureau of Land Management:
"you can then click on the Standard tab and by entering
Hedg%p_th .... the % sign and the under bar [shift + the key to the left of =]
can be used as wild card characters.... and selecting "all states", below are
the ones that came up .... many have a scanned image of the original
document .... that you can print out!  you can narrow down your search by
entering a first name, or first letter of the first name .... and also selecting
the state of interest, from those that are available .... Note : This site does
not cover the thirteen colonies, their territories, and a few other states. they
do have resource links,  for most states."
Kenny related the following concerning locating the property:
...go to the record of interest, by clicking on the persons name ... and then click on the tab for "legal land description"  the info for Charles' property Sec. 31 Twp. 12-S
Range 9-E,  Huntsville Meridian,  Calhoun Co., Alabama

I entered Calhoun County in to the search box at topozone.com and got this
link

http://topozone.com/map.asp?z=16&n=3757742&e=619039&size=l&loc=Calhoun+County

Knightens Crossroads is in Sec. 29 .... Sec. 31 is kitty corner to the
south-west [down one and to the left one] .... the red line running along the
bottom [south] side of Sec. 31 is the dividing line of Twp. 12-S and 13-S ...
the black dash or phantom line on the left [west] side of Sec. 31 is the
dividing line between Range 8-E and 9-E ... and also it is the county line of
Etowah and Calhoun Counties.

If you live in this general area ... you might go to the court house or the
city/town hall .... and find out where they keep the old parcel / land map
plates for this area .. Piedmont might be a first area to check with, and then
Jacksonville ... but you never know by chance one of the smaller towns
might have the records too !  Note some area's don't up-date these maps
as often as other's .... so you may be looking for something 5 to 10 years
after the date of 2/26/1896 when the deed was filed ...
