He appears thereupon to have surrendered the Lordship of the great district of Cum berland, which he had acquired, shortly before, from Henry I. In 1124 he was Co mmander of the Royal forces in Normandy. He married Lucy, widow of Roger FITZ-G EROLD (by whom she was mother of William de Roumare, afterwards Earl of Lincoln ). Ranulf or Randle de Mes chines, surnamed de Bricasard, Viscount Bayeux, in Normandy, (son of Ralph de M eschines, by Maud, his wife, co-heir of her brother, Hugh Lupus, the celebrated Earl of Chester), was given by King Henry I the Earldom of Chester, at the dec ease of his 1st cousin, Richard de Abrincis, 2nd Earl of Chester, of that famil y, without issue. By some historians, this nobleman is styled Earl of Carlisle, from residing in that city; and they further state that he came over in the tr ain of the Conqueror, assisted in the subjugation of England, and shared, of co urse, in the spoil of conquest. He was lord of Cumberland and Carlisle, by desc ent from his father, but having enfeoffed his two brothers, William, of Couplan d, and Geffrey, of Gillesland, in a large portion thereof, he exchanged the Ear ldom of Cumberland for that of Chester, on condition that those whom he had set tled there should hold their lands of the king, in capite. Earl Of Norfolk Hugh LE BIGOD7,10,13,14,16,27,72,97,175,176,199,213,261,312,537,2377,2387,3226 was born about 1095 in Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire, England.13,2377,2387,3226 He died in Sep 1177 in Thetford Abbey, Norfolk, England.13,2373,2377,2387,3226 He was christened in Of, Framlingham, Suffolk, England.12,13 He was buried in Thetford Abbey, Norfolk England.12,13,16 He was in 1st Earl Of Norfolk And Suffolk (Dec 1140 Or Jan 1141 - ) (1155 DE Novo By Henry Ii); Steward To Ki.2373 he appears as king's dapifer (steward) in 1123, and before thatdate he was cons table of Norwich Castle and governor of the citydown to 1122, when it obtained a charter from the crown. Passingthe best years of his manhood in the distracti ons of the civilwars of Stephen and Matilda, when men's oaths of fealty satligh tly on their consciences, he appears to have surpassed hisfellows in acts of de sertion and treachery, and to have beennever more in his element than when in r ebellion. His firstprominent action in history was on the death of Henry I in 1 135,when he is said to have hastened to England, and to have swornto Archbishop William Corbois that the dying king, on somequarrel with his daughter Matilda, had disinherited her, andnamed Stephen of Blois h!s successor. Stephen's promp t arrivalin England settled the matter, and the wavering prelate placedthe crow n on his head. Hugh's reward was the earldom of Norfolk. The new king's energy a t first kept his followers together, butbefore Whitsuntide in the next year Ste phen was stricken withsickness, a lethargy fastened on him, and the report of h isdeath was quickly spread abroad. A rising of the turbulentbarons necessarily followed, and Bigod was the first to take uparms. He seized and held Norwich; b ut Stephen, quickyrecovering, laid siege to the city, and Hugh was compelled to surrender. Acting with unusual clemency, Stephen spared thetraitor, who for a s hort time remained faithful. But in 1140 heis said to have declared for the emp ress, and to have stood asiege in his castle of Bungay; yet in the next year he is in theranks of Stephen's army which fought the disastrous battle ofLincoln. In the few years which followed, while the war draggedon, and Stephen's time w as fully occupied in subduing theso-called adherents of the empress, who were r eally fighting fortheir own hand, the Earl of Norfolk probably remained within hisown domains, consolidating his power, and fortifying hiscastles, although in 1143-4 he is reported to have beenconcerned in the rising of Geoffrey de Mande ville. The quarrelbetween the king and Archbishop Theobald in 1148 gave the nex toccasion for Hugh to come forward; he this time sided with thearchbishop, and received him in his castle of Framlingham, butjoined with others in effecting a reconciliation. Five yearslater, in 1153, when Henry of Anjou landed to assert his claimto the throne, Bigod threw in his lot with the rising power, andheld out in Ipswich against Stephen's forces, while Henry, onthe other side, laid si ege to Stamford. Both places fell, but inthe critical state of his fortunes Ste phen was in no position topunish the rebel. Negotiations were also going on bet ween thetwo parties, and Hugh again escaped. On Henry's accession in December 1 154, Bigod at once received aconfirmation of his earldom and stewardship by cha rter issuedapparently in January of the next year. The first years of thenew re ign were spent in restoring order to the shatteredkingdom, and in breaking the power of the independent barons. Itwas scarcely to be expected that Hugh should rest quiet. Heshowed signs of resistance, but was at once put down. In 1157Hen ry marched into the eastern counties and received the earl'ssubmission. After t his Hugh appears but little in the chroniclesfor some time; only in 1109 he is named among those who had beenexcommunicated by Becket. This, however, was in c onsequence ofhis retention of lands belonging to the monastery of Pentney inNor folk. In 1173 the revolt of the young crowned prince Henryagainst his father, a nd the league of the English barons withthe kings of France and Scotland in his favour, gave the Earl ofNorfolk another opportunity for rebellion. He at once became amoving spirit in the cause, eager to revive the feudal powerwhich Henry had curtailed. The honour of Eye and the custody ofNorwich Castle were promise d by the young prince as his reward. But the king's energy and good fortune were equal to theoccasion. While he held in check his
