Stua rt's "Royalty For Commoners" (206:38) refers to him as "the Burgundian
opponen t of the Capets".
In the early 880s, his brother, BOSON, king of Provence, m ade him count of
Autun. By 890, Richard, who, by then, was known by his nickna me, "The
Justiciar" was also master of Sens, Auxerre, and Troyes. This was the Frankish
portion of the ancient kingdom of Burgundy and was destined to becom e the
Duchy of Burgundy under the Capetian kings of France.
Some sources ha ve ERMENGARDE as his daughter. This is possible, but not nearly
proven, and th ere is much debate on the topic.

He was Count of Blois & Champagne. Rudolph III , the king of Burgundy had died
in 1032. He was childless and Eudes, as his n ephew, was to have been heir to
the throne of Burgundy. The German Emperor Co nrad II, who had long been trying
to bring Burgundy under his authority, had m arried one of Rudolph's nieces.
Rudolph designated Conrad as his successor. E udes contested the succession and
was able to gather much support. As Conrad was occupied fighting the Poles,
Eudes was able to occupy western Switzerland. The Archbishop of Lyone, Gerold,
Count of Geneva, and many others recognized Eudes as king. Conrad, however,
was able to win Humbert I, Count of Maurienn e, who was the founder of the house
of Savoy, to his side. This gave Conrad t he upper hand, but he was unable to
achieve final victory until Eudes perished in battle at Bar. Conrad made his
son, the future Emperor, Henry III, king o f Burgundy. From this time forwared
