(First Family)

L1 Alexander Stewart, bc 1491, d 9 September 1513 (Flodden), m ?
[Lived: ]- Made Archbishop of St Andrews in 1504 by James IV (Machie's Short History of Scotland p 121) and Chamberlain of Scotland - date unknown.
- From Erasmus and the Northern Renaissance, Margaret Mann Phillips, (published by The English Universities Press Ltd, London) 1959 edition, pp 58-59 is the following reference of him:-

"The next place in which he (Erasmus) stayed for any length of time was Padua, where he went to join the household of another noble pupil, Alexander Stuart, a natural son of James IV of Scotland. This young man of eighteen was already Archbishop of St. Andrews, and seems to have been a remarkable youth. Erasmus was very fond of him, and drew an affectionate portrait of him in a later edition of the Adages, describing his handsome presence, his love of learning, the discussions on serious subjects at his table, the music and singing after dinner, the tact with which he managed his numerous household. All these things give point to the Adage against war, Dulce bellum inexpertis, for the young man fell by the side of his father at Flodden.

"Erasmus found Padua an attractive place, more Christian than the rest of Italy, and favourable to his humanistic studies also. But war was still raging through the Peninsula, and in December 1508 the formation of the League of Cambrai, uniting the Emperor, the King of France, the King of Spain and the Pope against Venice, made it discreet to leave the territories of the Republic. Erasmus's party arrived at Siena, where the young archbishop continued his studies in law, and they all witnessed the curious games and bull-fights of Carnival time. But Erasmus was impatient now to get to the central point of his journey, and early in 1509 he took leave of the archbishop and went on alone to Rome."

>From this I would conclude that Alexander was 18 years old in 1508, which would suggest he was born in 1490. While the date of the Battle of Flodden was September 1513.

The above reference does not mention if Alexander was married or not. However, in my judgment, it suggests that although he was eighteen years old (an age in which he could easily have been married), Alexander was single. He is referred to as "a remarkable youth" and "the tact with which he managed his numerous household." This also suggests that he had some wealth either of his own or through his natural father James IV of Scotland. Perhaps there is something in Dulce bellum inexpertis which might assist with the puzzle of whether Alexander was married and had a family. On page 60, it states that Erasmus left Italy for England in the early summer of 1509. This was after Alexander had gone to Scotland. Alexander fought with his father at Flodden in which they both died.

It would appear from the following reference in Sir Iain Moncreiffe's The Highland Clan, p 49, "As throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the Hamilton Chiefs were often the nearest heirs presumptive to the throne." If the second Lord Boyd had not been murdered in 1484 then this honour may have fallen upon the Boyds.
