Notes

"A James T. Dent was living in Tuscaloosa County, Ala. in 1850, and 1855 per census records. He was living in Columbia Co.Georgia in 1840, and in Augusta in Richmond County Georgia in 1830. He moved to Tuscaloosa around 1850 which was many years after his sister, Maria D. Neilson did in 1832, and his brother, Dennis, in 1820's. He is shown as a General by ancestry.com world tree.

On 7/12/1842, he deeded slaves to his daughter, Elizabeth V. Donoho (Brother Dennis Dent-Trustee) On1/12/1848, he deeded by gift to his daughter, Savannah V. Dent, slaves. He loaned his son, Eugene T. Dent, a negro woman on 1/8/18 52, per Tusc. Co. Court records.

He wrote a series of letters to his daughter, Elizabeth Donoho, dating from 1832 to February 1850. They are most interesting and somewhat melancoly. His wife died in 1830 and he sent his daughters to live with his brother, Dennis Dent, in Tuscaloosa. He remained in Augusta with his son, Eugene. The letters reflect on his health, the poor state of his mill, and problems with money and Eugene's education. He resisted moving to Ala., but apparently did so around 1850.
He was referred to as Major James T. Dent in an obituary notice in the Livingston, Ala. Journal of Sept. 3, 1869. It mentioned he was one of the heroes of Lundy's Lane and that he died in Tuscaloosa last week aged 80.

From an article in the Tuskaloosa Gazette, Dec 22, 1887, Chapt XXVI, he was most likely the brother who was in business as a commission merchant with Dennis Dent in Mobile around 1860."
