Col. George Washington. In spite of the fact that they were
second cousins the two seem to have had some misunderstandings.
Dennis resigned and returned home but his resignation may have
been partly due to ill health for he died soon after, about
1757."

Amy purchased from Francis Meriweather, 250 acres in S. Farnham
Parish, Essex Co. Deeds pp. 188-189 in Feb 1708/9, the land was
bounded by Hoskins Creek, John Meador's, John Gatewood's, Thomas
Wheeler's & Mary Grigory's line.
Amy m. 2nd Joseph Baker before 9 May 1710, shown in court
record. Joseph had the title of "Mr." denoting that he was a
man of importance. Joseph's will was dated 20 Sep 1750 probated
15 Nov 1750. A wealthy merchant, he left large bequeaths to the
Gatewood children.
Amy's will made April 4, 1744 and probated June 18, 1745 left
Amy, daughter of her son John a gold ring, and Amy daughter of
James the North Hole Plantation. Her son John and his wife
Catherine had five sons and three daughters.
Amy was prob. 80-85 yrs old when she died in 1745. Her Will in
Bk 7, pps. 335-337, Essex Co, S. Farnham Parish, VA. Written
4 Apr 1744 and Probated 18 Jun 1745. Her will was signed with

Farguson.
Exec: sons Thomas & James Gatewood. Wit: Thomas Barker & Mary
Anderson.
Amy named only 3 of James children, he had at least 1 more, John
b 1740.
From: 'GATEWOOD' by Gordon Jefferson Gatewood: The date and
place of the marriage of John and Amy Gatewood has eluded
searchers thus far. Amy's maiden name is equally as elusive.
However, the following information is found concerning Amy's
maiden name: "Thomas Magrah" a planter of Essex County,
Virginia, signed a will 21 November 1722 in which generous
bequests were made to James, John and Phillip Gatewood.
Witnesses: David Scott and Amy Baker, whose mark was a capital
"M". She used the same mark 10 Jan 1706/7 when, as executrix,
the will of John Gatewood was offered to probate. The mark, and
the association of Thomas Magrah with the Gatewood family
suggests the possibility that Amy Gatewood and Thomas Magrah
may have been related. James & John were Amy's sons; Phillip
was a grandson, a son of John, Jr; David Scott was Amy's
son-in-law, being the second husband of her daughter Amy.
