Note* | He · Dawson & Virgie lived with Dawson's parents in Hemming Community, CookeCo, Texas · Moved to Tolbert Community near Vernon, Texas, to be near kinfolk and grow cotton · Connie was born December 28, 1913; Elvis was born December 20, 1915 · In 1916, Dawson sent Virgie & the children to Wichita Falls to visit her mother while he moved via wagon to Hereford, Texas. There heheard of homestead land available at Springer, NM. Called the family to cometo Hereford by train, & they drove the wagon across country, asking for directions to Springer along the way. · Homesteaded on Texas Mesa (named because all homesteaders were Texan) 7-8 miles north of Springer, NM · Friendtook Dawson to town so he could buy his first car; let him practice driving on the way · Sold the homestead & moved the family back to Lockney, Texas by car Christmas 1923 · Moved equipment & animals back to Texas by wagon. Animals: Tobe & Edny, wagon team mules; Topsy & Turvey, workhorse colts; their mothers; chickens; & dog. · Rented & farmed several places around Lockney; kids went to Irick School & Lockney High · Joyce was born April 6,1930 · Moved to Tulia, Texas about 1931 & rented several places; lived there 6 years · Moved to Spade community near Littlefield in 1938, to the first place they ever owned · Moved into Littlefield, Texas late 50's-early 60's From Constance Latheta Roberson Sanderson's notes: Early Years Virgie, Letitia, and Nell all went to Denton to college to make teachers. Virgie went to the Women's College at least part of the time. I don't know which school Letitia and Nell went to. Nell met Mack there when they roomed at his mother's house. Their home was at Thornberry at that time. Virgie met Dawson aftershe started teaching in the area where he lived. Marriage license for Virgie May Lynskey and Lannie Dawson Roberson issued in Gainesville, Texas. She taught school in an adjoining community (name I do not know). His community was Hemming and was between Pilot Point and Sanger, Texas. They married in March of 1913, made a crop in that area in 1913. Moved to near Vernon, Texas in Dec of 1913. Connie was born Dec 28, 1913 in Wilbarger County, Texas (Vernon is the county seat) near the community of Tolbert. Dawson had cousins who lived in this area (between Vernon and Oklahoma). Dawson's mother and these cousins'mother were sisters. The men (husbands of these mothers) were first cousins and last names were Roberson. (NOTE: Leah Ann and Angeline Hooks married Wm Jefferson and Julius Roberson (his uncle), respectively). We lived there and made two crops. Elvis was born there 2 years and 2 days (Dec 30, 1915) after I was. They decided to move to Hereford, Texas and Virgie went to Wichita Falls by train to visit her family as he drove team, covered wagon, and belongings from Vernon to Hereford to find a place to live. After he got to Hereford,he decided to go on to New Mexico and homestead some property. Must have been in March. Remember her talking of how the wagon wheels cut down in the mud as the snow had melted. They homesteaded southeast of Springer, NM. I think the homestead must have taken 7 years. We started to school in a little rural, one-teacher school. Daddy took us on horseback in buggy 2 or more miles. Went to school 1 year at Colmar, NM by bus; then 1 year in Springer before moving back to Texas near Lockney. Letitia lived in Amarillo by then and G. M. and Catherine were small. I was in the 4th grade and Elvis was in 2nd grade. We lived around Lockney until 1933. I graduated from high school in 1930 at Lockney. Joyce was born in 1930. I went to West Texas State Teachers College at Canyon, Texas school year 1930-31. Stayed out 2 years. Went back fall '33 and in most of the time until finished the course in January 1936. Elvis graduated at Tulia and Joyce at Spade. Dawson and V. | |
