HART LEVERTON and CO., Solicitors for the said Agnes Marcella Swann. (142).2' As of 30 July 1937, Charles Elias was also known as Peter Charles Swann.2

He and Elizabeth Haydon were engaged on 22 April 1952; and an announcement appeared in The Times, Forthcoming Marriages: 'Mr P.C. Swann and Miss E Haydon. The engagement is announced, and the marriage will take place shortly in Toyko, between Mr. Peter Charles Swann, M.A., of Oxford, son of the late Henry Swann and of Mrs. A. Marcel Swann, and Elizabeth, younger daughter of Canon and Mrs. H.A. Haydon, of St Nicholas's Vicarage, Warwick.3' Charles Elias married Elizabeth Haydon after 22 April 1952 at Tokyo, Japan.3 Charles Elias was a contributor to the Tombs and Mural Paintings of Ch'ing-Ling. 'The English captions were prepared by Prof. Shinobu Iwamura of the Research Institute of Humanistic Sciences, Kyoto University, and revised by Mr. Peter C. Swann of the Museum of Eastern Art, Oxford University.' in 1953.4 He was executor for his Mother and the 1954 National Probate Calendar records his Mother was 'of 398 Chester-road-north Sutton Coldfield Warwickshire widow' and Probate was granted in Birmingham 'to Muriel Olga Silke (wife of James Joseph Silke) and Peter Charles Swann university official' on 18 June 1954.5 He was a contributor to 2000 Years of Japanese Art in 1958.6 He was the author of An Introduction to the Arts of Japan and Chinese Painting in 1958.7,8 He was the author of Chinese Monumental Art in 1963.9 He was Curator of Oxford University's Museum of Eastern Art before 1966.10,11 He was the author of L'Arte Della Cina in 1966.12 He was the author of The Sorry Plight of The ROM, Volume 1, Issue 7, Toronto Life in 1967.13 He was the subject of the following biographical information in the Brock Campus News of 7 May 1970:

'Peter Swann has been Director of the Royal Ontario Museum since 1966. He came to Toronto
from the Ashmolean Museum of Oxford University where he was the Keep of Eastern Art. Under his
direction, the galleries were transformed into an outstanding show which the Times of London
remarked, at its opening four years ago, sets an example of excellence for British Museums.
Previously, Mr. Swann was retained by Princeton University to install its Eastern
collections. He restarted and has been editor of Oriental Art, the largest publication in the
world of its kind, for fifteen years.

'Mr. Swann entered Oxford University in 1939 on a history scholarship, but left the
following year to join the Royal Navy. He volunteered to study Japanese and was so successful that
he was sent to Washington where he became head of an Anglo-American naval intelligence translation
bureau.

'After the war he returned to Oxford and earned First-class Honours in Classical Chinese.
There he joined the Indian Institute under Wilhelm Cohn a leading authority on Chinese
painting, and helped reorganize it as a museum of Eastern Art. On Cohn's death, Mr. Swann became
Keeper of Eastern Art at the Ashmolean.

'He was a professorial fellow of St. Edmund Hall, one of the oldest of Oxford's colleges.
In addition to numerous scholarly articles, he is author of Art in China, Korea and Japan,
Chinese Painting3 and An Introduotion to the Arts of Japan, and has edited other books. Among works
translated into French and German are his The Monumental Art of China and Hokusai.
One of his hobbies is building houses - he has built three so far in Oxford.
Mr. Swann has many outspoken ideas about the needs of the Royal Ontario Museum and its
importance to Canadian life. "Given the necessary backing," he claims, "we will make it the pride
of the continent."

'Because of limited facilities, only one-seventh of the Museum's collection is on display
and office space for the staff of 260 is desperately short. It needs massive support to fulfill
its obligations to Canada and the world. The ROM is recognized as Canada's greatest museum noted
for excellence in many departments, both science and arts. Its Asian section is of special interest
to him.11'

He was the author of Art of China, Korea, and Japan in 1974.14,15 He was the author of A Concise History of Japanese Art - A general survey of Japanese art, including textiles, ceramics, and calligraphy as well as more traditional forms, explores the cultural and religious influences that have shaped its development in 1979.7 He recounted in Spirited Commitment: The Samuel and Saidye Bronfman Family Foundation published in 2010 by Roderick MacLeod, Eric John Abrahamson. After he was a Director of the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), he was hired as the executive director of the Bronfman family foundation.16,17,18

He died; and a notice was published in the Oxford University Gazette, 14 January 1998: Obituaries, St Edmund Hall 'PETER CHARLES SWANN, MA, 25 December 1997; commoner 1940–1 and 1946–51. Aged 75.10,19'
