The Great Christmas Bazaar Fire at Clapham Junction: All That Remains of Messrs. Arding and Hobbs' Premises
'The Illustrated London News'
25 December 1909
'The Illustrated London News'
25 December 1909
She appeared in a report in The Times of 5 January 1910 under the heading Clapham Junction Fire:- 'Yesterday, at the Battersea Coroner's Court, Mr Troutbeck continued the inquiry with regard to the fire which took place in Messrs. Arding and Hobbs, Clapham Junction, on December 20th...Evidence was called to prove the death of George Neighbour, who was employed by Messrs. Arding and Hobbs as a carver and whose body has not been recovered. This case raises the number of deaths known to have been cause by the fire to eight'. Among those giving evidence 'Miss Florence Philbrook, of 206 Gipsy-hill-road, West Norwood, said that she was in the shop window standing behind the window-dresser, whom she had asked to get a necklace. He reached towards it, and suddenly she saw flames. A moment earlier she had heard a sound like that caused by puncturing a bicycle tire. The window-dresser tried to put out the fire with his hands. There was an extinguisher in the window. She gave the alarm and left the premises. The employes were exercised in fire drill.' It was reported there were 306 employees and more than 1,000 customers on the premises on the day of the fire. The electrical adviser to the Phoenix Fire Insurance Company stated notice had not been given to the company to inspect the special arrangements for the Christmas season, as had been the case up to 1908. 'The Coroner, addressing the jury, said that anybody who dressed shop windows in a similar manner in future would run a serious legal risk...There could be no suggestion whatever against Messers. Ardine and Hobbs. The fact that, of, perhaps 1,000 who were on the premises almost the whole got safely out showed that all the precautions which were thought to be necessary were taken. The jury found that the fire was caused through the breaking of an incandescent lamp in one of the windows, and that the deaths of the eight victims were caused thereby...'
The Sydney Morning Herald, New South Wales, Australia, of 22 December 1909 contained a full report on the fire dated 'London,20 December 1909' headed 'Disastrous Fires. Clapham Shops Destroyed. Forty Buildings in Flames. Panic Among Customers. Death Toll Not Ascertained. Damages, One Million'. The Illustrated London News of 25 December contained a picture of 'The Great Christmas Bazaar Fire at Clapham Junction: All That Remains of Messrs. Arding and Hobbs' Premises'. The store was subsequently reopened and continued to trade for many more years.7,8,9,10
She appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at 71 Westow Street, Upper Norwood, Surrey, England, as Daughter, age 24, single, birthplace Rommany Road, West Norwood, and she was an Assistant at a Jewellers.11 As of 25 December 1911, her married name was Gower.12 She married William Edward Gower on 25 December 1911 at All Saints with St Margaret, Upper Norwood, Surrey, England; and their marriage by Banns was recorded at Croydon Registration district in the December quarter 1911. 'Historical Information
The Menin Gate is one of four memorials to the missing in Belgian Flanders which cover the area known as the Ypres Salient. Broadly speaking, the Salient stretched from Langemarck in the north to the northern edge in Ploegsteert Wood in the south, but it varied in area and shape throughout the war.
'The Salient was formed during the First Battle of Ypres in October and November 1914, when a small British Expeditionary Force succeeded in securing the town before the onset of winter, pushing the German forces back to the Passchendaele Ridge. The Second Battle of Ypres began in April 1915 when the Germans released poison gas into the Allied lines north of Ypres. This was the first time gas had been used by either side and the violence of the attack forced an Allied withdrawal and a shortening of the line of defence.
'There was little more significant activity on this front until 1917, when in the Third Battle of Ypres an offensive was mounted by Commonwealth forces to divert German attention from a weakened French front further south. The initial attempt in June to dislodge the Germans from the Messines Ridge was a complete success, but the main assault north-eastward, which began at the end of July, quickly became a dogged struggle against determined opposition and the rapidly deteriorating weather. The campaign finally came to a close in November with the capture of Passchendaele.
'The German offensive of March 1918 met with some initial success, but was eventually checked and repulsed in a combined effort by the Allies in September.
'The battles of the Ypres Salient claimed many lives on both sides and it quickly became clear that the commemoration of members of the Commonwealth forces with no known grave would have to be divided between several different sites.
'The site of the Menin Gate was chosen because of the hundreds of thousands of men who passed through it on their way to the battlefields. It commemorates casualties from the forces of Australia, Canada, India, South Africa and United Kingdom who died in the Salient. In the case of United Kingdom casualties, only those prior 16 August 1917 (with some exceptions). United Kingdom and New Zealand servicemen who died after that date are named on the memorial at Tyne Cot, a site which marks the furthest point reached by Commonwealth forces in Belgium until nearly the end of the war. New Zealand casualties that died prior to 16 August 1917 are commemorated on memorials at Buttes New British Cemetery and Messines Ridge British Cemetery.
'The YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL now bears the names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known. The memorial, designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield with sculpture by Sir William Reid-Dick, was unveiled by Lord Plumer on 24 July 1927.5'
