Mother: Mary DEBNAM |
Mrs. Letitia (Preston) Floyd (wife of Governor John Floyd , and
daughter of William and Susannah [Smith] Preston ) in a letter
to her son Colonel Benjamin Rush Floyd , dated Feb. 22, 1843 ,
and published in The Standard, Richmond , June 5, 1880 , page 4,
column 2, says that William Preston married July 17, 1761 ,
Susannah Smith , daughter of Francis Smith , of Hanover . Though
there appears among the late E. P. Valentine 's papers no
evidence from official records specifically stating the names of
the children of Francis Smith , yet the relationship of
Granville Smith , and Mrs. Susannah (Smith) Preston as brother
and sister is tracable to a statement of Mrs. Susan Ann
(Pleasants) Gray , a grand daughter of Granville Smith .* It is
clear from the will of Thomas Smith , of Louisa County , dated
March 30, 1795 , probated April 10, 1797 (see ante page 2178),
that said Thomas Smith had brothers Francis Smith , Parke Smith
and Granville Smith , and a sister Mrs. Edward Johnson . Thus we
have the names of six children of Francis Smith , viz.: Susannah
(Mrs. Preston ), Elizabeth (Mrs. Johnson ) Thomas Smith ,
Granville Smith , Parke Smith and Francis Smith . The names of
John Smith , Ballard Smith and William Smith appear in the list
of the children of Francis Smith as given by his great
grand-daughter, Mrs. Susan Ann (Pleasants) Gray , grand daughter
of Granville Smith .
There has not so far been discovered any record evidence of the
parentage of Francis Smith , of Hanover County . The tradition
among his descendants is that he was a son of "Doctor John Smith
and Elizabeth Ballard ." This statement is contained in account
of her family given by his great grand-daughter, Mrs. Letitia
(Floyd) Lewis * (wife Colonel William L. Lewis ), in a letter to
Honorable Robert W. Hughes , under date of June 13, 1879 , and
published in The Standard, Richmond, Virginia , September 18,
1880 , page 4, column 2.
"Doctor John Smith " is evidently a mistake for William Smith ,
as there is record evidence of the fact that William Smith (died
1734 ) married Elizabeth , daughter of Thomas Ballard .*
The cumulative circumstantial evidence by reason of which
Francis Smith is "placed" in this pedigree as a son of William
and Elizabeth (Ballard) Smith , is as follows:
1. The tradition derived through Mrs. Letitia Lewis to the
effect that Francis Smith 's mother was "Elizabeth Ballard ."
2. The constant recurrence of the name of Ballard as a baptismal
name among the descendants of Francis Smith .
3. The appearance in the records of Francis Smith and Thomas
Ballard Smith , of Louisa County , acting together in several
transactions. Francis Smith and Thomas Ballard Smith executors
of John Smith , August, 1744 (see ante page 2164) and their
connection with the so-called Granville Company. (See ante page
2187 et seq.)
The Valentine Papers, Vol 1-4, 1864-1908
Pasteur Family*
Smith Family (For data from records relative to this Smith
family see ante page 2160 et seq.)
4. [probably] John Smith . At Caroline County Court, August 1744
, in a petition brought by Thomas Ballard Smith and Francis
Smith executors of the last will and testament of John Smith ,
decd., against William Barkesdale ; judgment is granted against
the defendant.
(Caroline County Order Book 1741-6 , page 305.) The will of John
Smith , who certainly died prior to August, 1744 , was not
recorded in Caroline County . The will books of that county are
missing, but the order books (from 1732 ) are preserved and were
searched by by the late Creed T. Davis for this item. Neither is
this John Smith 's will in Spotsylvania , Essex , Louisa ,
Middlesex ; nor was it been turned up in any search made by the
late E. P. Valentine .*
