2 John Holder, Col b: 1744 Culpeper Co., VA d: 1799 Lower Howards Creek, Clark Co., KY. +Margaret Buchanan b: Bet. 1750 - 1762 ( this is a probable partner, no marriage records have ever been found)

There is much speculation on whether or not Capt. John Holder was married before his marriage to Fanny Calloway. A letter in a file from the Kentucky Historical Society in Frankfort KY, dated 1 May 1956 from the Regent of the John Marshall Chapter, DAR, states: "...Capt. John Holder who married 1st ____Drake and 2nd Frances Calloway..."

KY Historical Society - 1956: "In the KY Historical Society Register, Vol.28,
John Holder was appointed a Lt. Col. by Gov. Isaac Shelby in 1794, making him
Commandant of the 17th Regiment, Clark Co.KY. Capt. John Holder assisted in the
recapture of the daughters of Boone and Callaway, and afterwards married Frances Callaway. He was with Col. John Bowman on his expedition against the Ohio Indians in May 1775, and at 'Holder's Defeat' in Fayette in 1782. Quitting the fort at Boonesboro in 1781 he built his own station two miles below on the Kentucky River. As a subordinate officer under Col. Benj. Logan, his name is identified with every chapter in the history of the county while Madison was a part of the territory over which Logan's office of County Lt. extended.

Capt. Holder's move in 1781 to his own station placed him in Clark Co., when that county was formed in 1792. He had a boat yard at his place on the Kentucky River, now known as Combs Ferry."

A monument erected to Capt. Holder reads: "An outstanding pioneer at Fort Boonesborough, 1776-81. Among the rescuers of Calloway and Boone girls captured by Indians. Named Colonel of the Militia, 1779. Engaged in expeditions against Indians. In 1781 built Holder's Station and operated boatyard at the mouth of Howard's Creek. Led in the Battle of Upper Blue Licks, 1782. Trustee of Winchester, Justice Co. Court."

Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, Vol.86, #4,p.329: The Defenders and Hunters of Boonesborough, 1779, according to George M. Bedinger: JNO. HOLDER, Jas. Estill, Sam Estill, Capt. Dav.Gass, Maj.Thos. Swearingen, Benoni Sweringen, Col. Wm. Morgan, Ralph Morgan, John Taylor, Sam.Dusee, John Strode, Jas. Duncan, John Constant, Jesse Hedges, John Gass, Wm. Cradlebaugh, Jacob Stearns [Starns], Old Nicholas Proctor and sons Jos. and Reuben, Old John South and sons Tom and Jack, another John South-distant relative, John
Martin, John Calloway, James Bathe [Beathe], James Berry, John Bankman, John Haweson, Chas. Edw. Lochart, Aquilla White, Joseph Doniphan.

From Winchester KY researcher, 1993: "He [Capt.Holder] died in debt - had gone bond for Robert Higgins, an early sheriff. I do not know what Higgins did but Holder and another bondsman lost everything. His children were put under guardianship to various relatives and a little later Frances [wife of John H.] remarried. A great grandson gave an interview with a Louisville news reporter and he told of visiting the graves of his famous ancestors - said that wooden tomb markers were at the graves of John and Frances Callaway Holder."

From abstracts of the Pittsburgh Gazette [People and Times of Western Penna., Vol.4 - Clara Duer, 1991,pp 84-85, 87, 89]: An account of the officers and enlisted men at Camp at French Town, Jan. 20, 1813 who went on to Presque Isle in the War of 1812 who "supported the double characters of Americans and Kentuckians." 12 were killed, 55 wounded, and one death from wounds.
Others taken prisoner. A List of Officers taken at French Town, January 22, 1813. James Winchester, Brig.Gen; Wm. The Virginia Legislature, sitting in session between 16 October 1780 and 2 January 1781, passed "An act for recruiting this state's quota of troops to serve in the Continental Army" [Hening 10:326-327] which called for each county to supply a specific number of men. The act further called for the county militia to be divided into equal units, or classes, and one man to be chosen by lot to serve 'during the war, or for the term of three years'. If the quota was not thus recruited, one man was to be drafted from each class. Culpeper County was responsible for furnishing 106 men. This collection lists all the men in each class and the individual drafted from each. In some cases a trade or physical description of the draftee is
given.
