NOTE: This family should not be confused with another Aaron
Hickinbottom who lived in Bledsoe Co. TN about the same time and
probably descended from the Monroe Co., West VA "Hickinbottom"
line.
The Cumberland Cave, second largest in America, was known as
Higginbotham Cave for many years. Aaron discovered the cave in
1810. It is now a well known tourist attraction, although it's
most beautiful feature is not open to the public, a 15 foot pure
white stalagmite, it's surface embedded with
diamond-like-calcite crystals, and judged to be among the most
beautiful in the world.
The legend is that Aaron was the first to venture into the cave
alone, where he was trapped on a high ledge in total darkness
after his torch went out. Three days later, he was miraculously
found safe and sound, but his hair had turned as white as snow."
