Notes

"The reminiscences of army life in Oklahoma from 1867 to 1871, herein given were secured from the late Captain Richard T. Jacob by Joseph B. Thoburn in 1919. Richard Taylor Jacob, Jr., was born at Louisville, Kentucky, Nov. 20, 1849. His father was Richard Taylor Jacob, Sr., who was a member of a family long prominent in Virginia and Kentucky; he was a second cousin of General Zachary Taylor and also of President James Madison. He served as a member of the Kentucky Legislature, was a Breckinridge elector in 1860, served as colonel of the 9th Kentucky Cavalry Regiment in the Federal Army, and as lieutenant governor of Kentucky from 1863 to 1867. His wife was Sarah McDowell Benton, youngest daughter of United States Senator Thomas Hart Benton, of Missouri. Richard Taylor Jacob, Jr., was educated in the public and private schools of his native state and attended the Kentucky Military Institute, near Frankfort, through the Junior year. He served in the Regular Army for twelve years. He re-entered the military service as a captain of United States Volunteers during the war with Spain, serving as such from June 8, 1898, to March 6, 1899. He located in Oklahoma City in 1906 and lived there at the time of his death, December 24, 1923.
