A history of the Middle [Virginia] District Baptist Association
is online at http://www.mdba.org/mdba.htm This district
includes Chesterfield county. Here is a portion of what the
site says under HISTORY.
"William Hickman, pastor of the Skinquarter and Tomahawk
Churches announced in the summer of 1783 that he [would] migrate
westward one year hence and that he would [en]courage his people
to give consideration to accompany[ing] him. He had previously
visited the Kentucky region [in] 1776, after which he began to
preach and organized Skinquarter Church. In August, 1784, he,
his wife and children, and several families of his churches
began move toward the frontier.
They reached Kentucky, where Hickman founded nearly a score of
frontier church gaining in some quarters the title "father of
Kentucky Baptists."
David Tinsley, pastor of Powhatan Church 1771-1776, moved first
to Mathews County, Virginia, before migrating to Georgia in
1785. John DuPuy, who succeeded Tinsley at Powhatan Church,
moved to Kentucky in 1783."

Fifth child of John James Dupuy and Susanna Levilain. "Rev. John
DuPuy; the old 'Dupuy's Meeting House,' a Baptist church, locatd
in the Eastern part of Powhatan Co., Va., took its name from
this man, who, during the time that its pastor, Rev. David
Tinsley, was seied by the hand of persecution and incarcerated
in the Chesterfield prison, was so stirred up at the forlorn
condition of the chruch that he began first as an exhorter, and
afterwards entered the ministry. A few years later, when Mr.
Tinsley gave up the charge, the church chose John Dupuy for its
pastor, whose ministrations were blessed with a revival, in
which were large accessions to the membership. He moved to
Kentucky, and became a member of Clear Creek church, Woodford
Co., in 1784. In 1801, he moved to Oldham Co., Ky., and joined
the church at Patton's Creek; later, he settled in Shelbyville,
Ky., but by request of the members of the Patton's creek chruch,
he retained his membership therein until his death;
