Schaffner, David Allen

David Allen Schaffner, 28, of Hot Springs, died Tuesday, September 24, 1996 at a local hospital. Born April 24, 1968, in Denver he attended Hot Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was a member of Lakeside Archery and Bow Hunters club and Hot Springs Jeep Jamboree. Survivors include his wife, Candy Schaffner of Hot Springs; his parents, Norman and Judy Schaffner of Hot Springs; his grandmother, Elnora Wilson of Hot Springs; his mother and father-in-law, Rubena and Aaron Watson of Hot Springs; one sister-in-law, LeAnn Ford of Hot Springs; one brother-in-law, Dennis Ford of Hot Springs; one niece, Stefanie Ford; one nephew, Chad Ford; aunts, uncles and cousins. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Watson officiating. Pallbearers will be John Watson, Jon Bryant, Steve Sisney, Steve Glisson Jr., Larry Vaughn and Mark Sanders. Honorary pallbearers are Drs. Timothy Webb and Martin Koehn and second floor Oncology at St. Joseph's Regional Health Center. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in Center Hill Cemetery. Scott, Cindy Ann Reese Norwood

Cindy Ann Reese Scott, age 46, of Benton died Friday April 17, 2009. She was born October 21, 1962, in Benton. Cindy was a clerk for Big Red Stores and was of the Pentecostal faith. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Brandi Lynn Thompson, grandparents, Douglas Bowen, Charles and Opal Reese.
Survivors, husband, Christopher Scott, Benton; son, Dustin Carl Kirkendoll, Benton; parents, Johnny and Judy Reese, Benton; brothers, Steven Reese, Benton; David Reese, Lake Isabella, California; Raymond Reese Silver Springs, Nevada; grandmother, Neta Bowen, grandchildren, Hayley Lynn Thompson, Kayla Denae Thompson and Kara Grace Thompson.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Ashby Funeral Home with burial at Social Hill Cemetery. Minister will be Bro. David Brewer.

Sharp, Elva L. Chenault

Sharp, Elva L., age 82, of Oklahoma City, went to be with the Lord June 17, 1986. She was a member of the Exchange Avenue Baptist Church, member of the Dahlia Garden Club and the Rebekah Lodge. She was a beloved mother and grandmother. Survived by 2 daughters, Eloise Rogers of Oklahoma City and Bonnie Bryan of Oklahoma City; 2 sisters, Christine Davis of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Myrtle Hammons of Oklahoma City; 2 brothers, Garland Chenault of Little Rock and Clomer Chenault of Oklahoma City; 4 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Shell, Theo Dale

Theo Dale Shell died Tuesday, June 22, 1999. He was 70. He was born February 23, 1929, to Elmer and Mary Iva Shell. He was a retired employee of Alcoa and a member of Gravel Hill Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher for 36 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, J. T. Shell and Keith Shell; and one sister, Johnnie Shephard, all of Benton. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Clara Garrett Shell; one daughter and son-in-law, Clarisse and Gary Harris of Benton; two grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer and Doug Tillery and Jared "J. D." and Lindsey Harris; three great-grandsons, Jonathan Tillery, Chandler Tillery and Laine Harris, all of Benton. Funeral was to be held at 1 p.m. today at Gravel Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Clarence Shell and the Rev. Gary Gipson officiating. Burial was to follow at New Rosemont Cemetery. Norris Garner, Mark Culpepper, Ted Duvall, Bob Nichols, Lyndolph Ziegler and Gordan Anderson were scheduled to serve as pallbearers. Jimmy Oglesby, Orvil McPherson and Eugene Harrison were to serve as honorary pallbearers. Visitation was held Wednesday night at Ashby Funeral Home. Shoppach, Almyra Martin "Allie" Vance

Mrs. Allie Vance Shoppach, aged 69, of Little Rock, a former Benton resident, passed away Tuesday at her home, 315 East Eleventh St. She is survived by her husband, John F. Shoppach of Lonoke; four sons, Charles and Thomas Shoppach of El Paso, Texas, J. W. and H. F. Shoppach of Little Rock; four daughters, Mrs. Mary Myers of Fortt Worth, Texas, Mrs. Ruth Moore of North Little Rock, Mrs. Alice Owens of Little Rock, and Mrs. Bama Roberson of Lonoke; a sister, Mrs. Nettie Vance Martin of Little Rock; two brothers, Rayburn and Clayburn Vance of Owensville. Skophammer, Leah Martin

The memorial service for Leah Martin Skophammer will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church, Albert Lea. The Rev. John Holt will officiate. Interment will be in the East Freeborn Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Bonnerup Funeral Service.
Leah died Thursday, August 28, 2008, at Oak Park Place, Albert Lea. She was 95 years old.
Leah was born in Benton, Arkansas, on March 30, 1913, the daughter of Napoleon and Nettie (Vance) Martin. She graduated from Little Rock High School and from Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
Leah was married to Joseph M. Skophammer on December 22, 1944, in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Leah taught in the elementary school in Crawfordsville, Arkansas. She has lived in Albert Lea since 1945. Leah has been an active member of First Lutheran Church, where she also taught Sunday School.
Leah was a member of the Does, PTA, a Girl Scout leader and a board member of Farmers State Bank. She enjoyed sewing and spending time with her family.
Leah is survived by her children: Nancy Skophammer of Albert Lea, Diane (Tom) Stockwell of Burnsville, Mary Jo (David) Wilcox of Olympia, Washington; grandchildren: Keith Wilcox, Ellen Wilcox (Peter Lane), Joe (Diana) Wilcox, Melissa Stockwell, Laura Stockwell; great-granddaughter, Josephine Lane; sister: Inez Martin of Little Rock, Arkansas; sister-in-law: Elizabeth Martin of Dallas, Texas; nieces and nephews.
Leah was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers: Vance and Jim Martin.

Smart, Shirley Ann Brakebill

Shirley Ann Brakebill Smart of Bryant, was born May 6, 1943, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to June Bruce and Jessie Lewis Brakebill. On May 21, 2008, her beautiful spirit entered into the gates of Heaven. Shirley graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1961. She attended Midwestern State University and was a member of Lamar Baptist Church in Wichita Falls. At the age of 17, she met a handsome service man, who was a sweet country boy from Bauxite, Arkansas. Larry D. Smart was stationed at Shepherd Air Force Base in Wichita Falls. Larry went out on a blind date as a favor to his roommate. You see, Larry was never going to marry or, heaven forbid, ever have children. A year after Larry returned from service in Thule, Greenland, they were married on August 11, 1962. They spent a year of service in California before moving back to Saline County and settling in Bryant. August 8, 1966, she gave birth to their son, David Wayne. She was such a proud mom, as he played sports and then signed with the Arkansas Razorbacks football team, and then as he finished his degree in finance and started his own construction business. After years of worry and prayer, she was blessed on September 30, 1995, with a beautiful "daughter"-in-law, Caryn, whom she just adores. September 29, 1970, she gave birth to their daughter, Cathy Ann. She would brag about how she now had her own personal nurse after Cathy became a registered nurse. On August 2, 2003, she received the gift of her son-in-law, Tony Fletcher. One of her greatest joys was "picking on him and him picking back!" Tony also gave her a grandson, T.J. Fletcher. Oh, how she loved T.J.'s red hair! Shirley is currently a member of First Baptist Church of Bryant. She attended Indian Springs Baptist Church for 20 years where she served as church clerk, Sunday School teacher & children's department director and sang in the choir. Shirley worked in civil service at the Little Rock Air Force Base before becoming a stay at home mom and the "Avon Lady" which she was known for 35 years in the Bryant area, serving a number of years as assistant district manager. She then worked and retired from the Arkansas State Department of Health, payroll division. Shirley was always involved in every aspect of her kid's lives, from being a past president of the Bryant PTA, Director of the Our Little Miss Pageant Program, Cub Scout Leader, Booster Club mom, softball coach, chauffer, and "Mom" to every teenager at Indian Springs Baptist Church. Lots of folks will always remember being chauffeured around in that old two-tone brown van or the church bus and hanging out at the house eating her famous cheese dip! Today she is reunited with her parents, her in-laws, Dub and Alma Smart, her sister, Mary Helen Foutch, and her baby grandson, Cody Brice, who she is rocking for the very first time! Although Larry, David, Caryn, Cathy, Tony and T. J. are saddened with her departure from this earth, they rejoice that her sick body and mind are now totally healed! She is singing with choirs of angels, dancing on streets of gold and seeing her Lord Jesus face to face! Shirley also leaves behind her very special cousins, "The Denim Sisters" and their families, Thelma and Tommy Jackson of Ft. Worth, Texas, Nancy and Jimmy Robinson and Patsy and Charlie Rogers of Wichita Falls, Texas, as well as may other family and friends. And we can't forget her precious and constant companion, Prissy, who she loved so dearly.
Shirley will lay in state at Roller-Ballard Funeral Home. The family will receive friends and family at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Thursday, May 22, 2008, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Graveside services will be held at Forest Hills Cemetery in Alexander on Friday , May 23, 2008 at 10:00 A.M. with Bro. Phillip Miller officiating. Pallbearers will be Steve Lawson, Shane Broadway, Tom Harris, Phil Edmonson, Don Woods and Shorty Moore. Honorary pallbearers are The Ed Love Sunday School Class and Phil Harris. A special thank you to her favorite doctors: Jeff Mayfield, Kathy Parnell and Eric Bravo at Baptist Health. And we can never say thank you enough to the Saline Memorial Hospital Hospice and Dr. Cartaya for the wonderful TLC we all received during the last two weeks. Frances Peeler Smith died Thursday, April 9, 1998. She was 92. She was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Smith; two sons, L. J. Smith and Hot Smith; one daughter, Brenda Smith; and one great-granddaughter. Survivors include two sons, John Smith of Keller, Texas, and Ron Smith of Grand Junction, Colorado; four daughters, Dal Taylor, Dorothy Bullard and Mary McCool, all of Benton, and Syb Hayden of Grand Junction, Colorado; one sister, Wilma Wilbanks of Benton; Boyd Wheeler; 24 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Ashby Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Harrell officiating. Burial will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park. Harvey "Hot" Smith of Benton died Saturday. He was 59.
He was a member of Holland Chapel Missionary Baptist Church and a mechanic.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Walton Smith.
Survivors are his mother, Frances Pearl Smith of Benton; two sons, Todd Lane Smith of Wynne and John Anthony Smith of Benton; three daughters, Dana Noel Throgmorton of Fort Smith, Melody Ann Thomas of Longview, Texas, and Gina Marie Smith of Benton; three brothers, L. J. Smith of Benton, Charles Smith of Keller, Texas, and Ronnie Smith of Grand Junction, Colorado; four sisters, Dal Taylor, Dorothy Bullard and Mary McCool of Benton and Syb Hayden of Grand Junction, Colorado, and 10 grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Ashby Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Harrell officiating. Burial will be in New Rosemont Cemetery.

James L. "L. J." Smith of Benton died Friday, July 18, 1997. He was 68. He was a carpenter. He was preceded in death by his father, James W. Smith. James "Jim" Walton Smith, aged 82, of Benton died Sunday. He was a retired nurses' aide from Benton Services Center and a member of First Church of the Nazarene. Survivors include his wife, Frances Smith; four sons, John Smith of Dallas, Ron Smith of Los Angeles, and L. J. Smith and Harvey Smith, both of Benton; four daughters, Dal Taylor, Dorothy Bullard and Mary McCool, all of Benton and Syb Hayden of Grand Junction, Colorado; 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Smith, Susie Albright

Susie M. Albright Smith, 90, of Malvern and formerly of Hot Springs died May 17, 2010. She was born January 28, 1920, in Saline County, Arkansas, to the late William Henry Albright and the late Nancy Ellen Ewell Albright. She was a member of First Baptist Church Malvern and formerly Hot Springs Baptist Church. She was a Master Gardener and past-president of the Hot Springs Iris Society.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe A. Smith; brother, John W. Albright and two sisters: Thelma E. Morgan and Dee Williams. Survivors include nieces and nephews: Danny Morgan, Sue Williams Gill, Connie Albright Burzik, Jan Albright, Gay Albright Goucher and Melissa Morgan Elrod.
Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday May 20, 2010, at Caruth-Hale Funeral Home with Rev. Clarence Shell officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers include: Jonathan Elrod, Colby Elrod, Danny Morgan, Danny Gill, Jan Albright and Ryan Gill.

James O. Smithers, aged 69, of Benton died today. He was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Veola Horne Smithers; one son, J. P. Smithers of Chicago, Illinois; two brothers, Charles O. Smithers and George W. Smithers, both of Benton; three sisters, Mrs. Artie McLean and Mrs. Alta Coburn both of Benton, and Mrs. Katie James of El Centro, California; and two grandchildren. Spencer, Lanny R.

Lanny R. Spencer, 69, of Atkins, died Thursday, October 28, 2009, at home.
He was born January 10, 1940, at Atkins and was the son of the late Roy and Georgia Pearl Austin Spencer. He was a 1958 graduate of Atkins High School and was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by his sister, Marilyn Belas of Burnet, texas; nieces, Mary Jo Marmon of Round Rock, Texas, Karen Mohan of Burnet, Texas.

Standridge, Harold Lloyd

Harold Lloyd Standridge, age 83, of Benton passed away Monday January 18, 2016. He was born June 20, 1932, in Lurton, Arkansas. Harold was a retired postal worker. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elisha and Ester Standridge, son, Lloyd Don Standridge.
Survivors, sons and daughters-in-law, Guy (Jennie) Standridge, Lonsdale; Harold Wayne (Patty) Standridge, Tennessee; daughter and son-in-law, Dixie Annette (Jeff) Pedigo, Benton; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Ashby's.

Mrs. Lois Stewart, 81, of Fort Smith died Thursday, November 22, 1990, in her home. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, of P.E.O. and Eastwood Garden Club. Dorothy Louise Sutton, age 59, of Bauxite; passed away Tuesday October 31, 2006. She was born on December 21, 1946 in Benton, Arkansas. Mrs. Sutton was a customer service manager for Wal-Mart and a member of the First United Pentecostal Church of Benton. She is preceded in death by her parents, David and Francis Peeler. She is survived by her husband, Dewey R. Sutton of Bauxite; two daughters, Karen Curtis of Mtn. Home and Kimberly Stuckey of Benton; brother, James Peeler of Benton; sister, Pat Bradberry of Benton and four grandchildren, Cody Stuckey, Bryce Stuckey, Mitchell Curtis and Ethan Curtis.
