Dies After Heart Attack
Charles C. Colby, 81, geographer and director of Mississippi Valley Investigations at Southern Illinois University, died Friday in La Crosse, Wis., of an apparent heart attack.
SIU President Delyte W. Morris Called Mr. Colby, the "dean of American geographers."
"It was his wealth of knowledge couple with vision and enthusiasm that enabled him to contribute so effectively to the Mississippi Valley Investigations the project he had directed in recent years and in which he was engaged at La Crosse at the time of his death," Morris said.
Mr. Colby was one of the first visiting emeritus professors to come to SIU when he joined the geography department staff in 1951.
Mr. Colby's studies of the area resulted in a book, "A Pilot Study of Southern Illinois," published at SIU in 1956.
He just completed another book entitled, "The Atlantic Arena," which will be published by the SIU Press this fall.
Before coming to SIU, Mr. Colby served as the chairman of the geography department at the University of Chicago for more than 30 years.
He was a specialist in the Division of Planning and Statistics, U.S. Shipping Board, 1918-19; advisor of War Shipping Administration, 1942; and a member of the division of Geology and Geography, National Research Council 1924-27 and 1940-43.
Mr. Colby served as a land planning consultant for the Tennessee Valley Authority from 1934 to 1938. From 1938 to 1942 he was a member of the Land Commission, Natural Resources Planning Board.
In 1939 he served as chairman of the sub-committee on Land Classification and in 1939, as a member of the sub-committee on Regional Approach to Employment Stabilization.
Mr. Colby was a consultant to headquarters for a commission delegated to select the site for the United Nations building in 1946.
A graduated of Michigan State Normal College in 1908, he received an honorary master of education degree from that college in 1922.
He received a bachelor of science degree from the University of Chicago in 1909 and doctor of philosophy degree in 1917.
In 1956, SIU awarded Mr. Colby an honorary doctor of science degree.
He was born in Romeo, Mich., April 13, 1884, the son of Frank and Anna Colby.
Mr. Colby who lived at 313 S. University Ave., leaves his wife Mary, and two sons, Stephen and Bruce.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in the Chapel of Hope in the Tower of Memories, Oakwoods Cemetery, 1035 E. 67th St., Chicago

Charles Carroll Colby (December 10, 1827 – January 19, 1907) was a Canadian lawyer, businessman and politician.
He was born in Derby, Vermont in 1827, the son of Moses French Colby, and came to Stanstead, Quebec with his family in 1832. He studied at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. He studied law, was called to the bar in 1855 and entered practice at Stanstead. Colby was elected as a Liberal-Conservative MP in the Canadian House of Commons in 1867 representing Stanstead and remained in parliament until his defeat in 1891. He served as President of the Privy Council under Sir John A. Macdonald from 1889 to 1891 and was previously Deputy Speaker and Chairman of Committees of the Whole of the House of Commons. Colby supported the introduction of tariffs to reciprocate against those imposed by the United States. He was a trustee of Stantead College and a director for several railway companies. Colby served as vice-president of the Quebec Temperance and Prohibitory League.
In 1859, Colby built Carrollcroft, his residence at Standstead, which now serves as the site of the Colby-Curtis Museum.

Charles C. Colby, late president of the Colby Piano Company, Erie, Pa., who died April 8, 1895, was born in Bradford, Vt., and was a son of John and Hannah (Rowel) Colby, his maternal grandmother being a direct descendant of Israel Putnam, of Bunker Hill fame. When Mr. Colby was quite young his father, who was a millwright, removed to Springfield, Pa., where he remained for several years and then went to Albert Lea, Minn. This city was surveyed and laid out by Mr. Colby in 1856; it is now the third city in size and importance in the State. Of the five children which reached maturity Charles C. was the eldest. He was educated in the public schools and academy of Springfield, Pa., early manifesting an interest in matters pertaining to music and musical instruments. When a boy he was a skillfull performer upon the violin. He followed school teaching for several years, the last three years in the mathematical department of the Chicago public schools. He then went to Minnesota, where he engaged in surveying, which he followed for twelve years. Removing to Carthage, Mo., he engaged in the sale of pianos and other musical instruments. He made the trip to Missouri with two wagons that were built to order, one of which carried a piano. He was accompanied by his 8-year-old daughter, Clara E. (now Mrs. W. M. Thoms), who has since become famous as a piano artist. On one side the canvas top of the wagon containing the piano could be withdrawn, exposing the piano, and thus, with Clara at the piano and Mr. Colby playing the violin, they gave concerts wherever they stopped at night. After remaining in Carthage for six years, Mr. Colby took up his residence in Vienna for the purpose of giving his daughter an opportunity of acquiring a classical education in music and the languages, for which she possessed much natural talent. He remained abroad five years, during which time he visited his native country twice, and then returned to New York City, where he engaged in the manufacture of pianos. Mr. Colby made several valuable improvements in pianos, the most important of which was his improved method of stringing. Finding that he could manufacture cheaper in Erie than in New York, he removed his business to Erie in 1888. The present plant covers a space of over three acres of ground and has a capacity of 100 pianos a week. It is one of the largest Institutions of its kind in the world, and is without doubt one of the best organized and equipped. Mr. Colby was the president of the company up to the time of his death, and his son, C. C. Colby, jr., superintendent of the factories; W. J. McCarter, secretary, and J. E. Patterson, treasurer. In addition to the officers, Mr. W. L. Darling, of Corry, Pa., is a director. The salesrooms are located at 1222 State street. In the second story of the building is a conservatory of music which has 350 pupils. The third story is occupied by "Colby Hall," where every season recitals are given by the leading artists of the country. The hall is also used for musical entertainments by the pupils of the conservatory. Mrs. Colby, the wife of C. C. Colby, is quite a noted artist having studied several years at the academy in New York City. She is of French parentage, although born in the United States. She has been an extensive traveler and spent four years in the city of Vienna, Austria. Mr Colby had four children; Clara E. (who married "Mr. William Thoms, publisher and proprietor of the American Art Journal of New York), Charles C. (who married Miss Gertrude Sturgeon, a talented young-pianist of Erie), Margaret (who married Mr. Hayes Russell, of Erie), and Miss Pearl L. Colby (who will graduate from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1895.).

Charles Clifton Colby, II, S.B., of Watertown, Mass., elected an annual member 1 April 1930, was born at Erie, Pa., 6 April 1895, the son of Charles Clifton and Effie Gertrude (Sturgeon) Colby, who was born in Bradford, Vt., 4 December 1806, married Hannah Rowell, daughter of Aaron and Polly (Putney) Rowell, and died at Albert Lea, Minn., 5 June 1876, through Charles Clifton Colby, whose wife was born as Albert Lea 23 July 1865 and married at Erie, 28 May 1890, Effie Gertrude Sturgeon, born at Fairview, Erie Co., Pa., 3 April 1871, daughter of Elias and Catherine E. (Spence) Sturgeon.
Charles Clifton Colby, II, attended the public schools of his native city, was graduated from Erie High School in 1912, and entered the University of Pennsylvania, where he received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1916.
For three years he was employed in the testing department of the General Electric Company at Schenectady, N.Y., and Pittsfield, Mass.; served for one year as illuminating engineer in the B.F. Goodrich Rubber Company at Akron, Ohio; for nine years a physicist, illuminating engineer, and radio tube engineer, in the Westinghouse Lamp Company at Bloomfield, N.J. In April 1930 he entered the employ of the Raytheon Production Company of Newton, Mass., in the radio tube development department, later becoming head of the inspection department and works laboratory, a position he held at the time of his death.
In the World War he served for one year in Company B, Seventy-fourth Engineers, and Company D, Twenty-ninth Engineers, and was engaged in the flash and sound ranging service in France from July 1918 to March 1919.
He was a member of the Institute of Radio Engineers, the Sigma Xi, an honorary scientific fraternity, and the Watertown Historical Society.
He found an avocation in genealogy, and he compiled over 6000 Colby items from cemetery and town records.
He married at Taunton, Mass., 22 June 1920, Frances Burton Gardiner, daughter of Walter Brown and Bessie Burton (Chamberlain) Gardiner, who, with a son, Charles Clifton Colby, IV, survives him.

Charles C. Colby is a native of McHenry County, Ill., born Sept. 14, 1844, a son of Page and Mehitable (Smith) Colby. He attended school till eighteen years of age and then began teaching, but having a decided preference for agricultural pursuits, soon left the school-room and devoted his entire attention to the farm. He now owns 220 acres of land, which is well improved. He gives considerable attention to stock-raising, and has the best grades of short-horned cattle, American merino sheep, Norman horses and Poland-China hogs. Mr. Colby was married Dec. 25, 1864, to Arminda F. Talbott, daughter of William Talbott, who came from England to America in 1820. They have two children - Fred T., born Oct. 24, 1865, graduated from Jennings Seminary, Aurora, Ill., June, 1884, and Carolina M., born Feb. 2, 1876. Politically Mr. Colby is a Republican. He takes special interest in educational matters and has served on the School Board several terms.

COLBY, CHARLES DEWITT Oct. 23, 1865-Sept. 23, 1941 Physician; specialist in the treatment of tuberculosis; after Army career and wide practice became chief of staff at the Nose and Throat Clinic at the University of Michigan; practiced in Asheville, North Carolina for almost 30 years before his death and was active in the development of Asheville as a health center.
