His wife and a boarder completed the household.6

He served in the Great War [WWI] and The National Archives contain a Medal card showing the Theatre of War he first served in was the Balkans starting on 26 October 1915. He was in the Army Ordnance Corps, Regimental number 0944 and was awarded the Victory Medal, the British War Medal and the 1915 Star.7

He and Elizabeth Jane Miller lived on 29 September 1939 at Maldon, Essex, England; where they were on the 1939 Register when she was age 62 and he was age 60 and an Agricultural Machine Fitter.8 Bertie James Saltmarsh died on 1 January 1957 at Essex, England, at age 77; and his death at age 77 was recorded at Maldon Registration district in the March quarter 1957.9,10 His estate was probated on 12 June 1957; and the 1957 National Probate Calendar records he was 'of 152 Woodfield Cottages Heybridge Maldon Essex' and Administration was granted in London 'to Elizabeth Jane Saltmarsh widow.10'

They are believed to have had eleven children.1,5 Margaret Jane Griffiths was an elector appearing on the Australian Electoral Roll in New South Wales at Eden Monaro District: 1930, 1936, 1937, 1943, 1949 and 1954.6

Strudwicke from 1952-1954. Darcy Ernest followed him in 1954 and Edward Wynne Strudwicke was a trustee in 1959.
