"William Colston was sheriff of Bristol, England, and amassed an immense fortune in the Spanish and Levantine trade. He died leaving two children, Edward Colston, his heir, who became the great philanthropist, and William Colston, who emigrated to America about the middle of the sixteenth century.

William Colston of Bristol, England, was a brother of Edward Colston, the great philanthropist, whose marble statue stands in All-Saints Church, Bristol, and to whose honour and memory a sermon is annually preached. William, b. about 1816, came to Virginia about 1645, and was clerk of Rappahannock County, Virginia.

Josiah filed for Rev War pension and said he enlisted as a private in 1780, and was present at the siege of Yorktown. He is listed in the DAR Patriot Index as Private, Virginia. Josiah was also commissioned as an ensign on 21 Oct 1788 in Fayette Co. KY and as a lieutenant on 6 Jun 1790. In 1810 Census in Woodford Co. KY he is listed with 10 in the family and 12 slaves.
