Father: John GARNETT Mother: Mary FOGG |
GARNETT, Joshua [1740-1794] Joshua GARNETT was born in about
1740 an was the son and heir of John GARNETT and Mary FOGG.
November 10, 1770 - Joshua GARNETT purchased 232 acres in Saint
Anne's Parish from Cornelius NOELL. The adjoining landowners
were John ROWSIE, James NOELL, John SAMUEL, Winefred GOULDM AN
and Francis RAMSEY. The witnesses were Robert RENNOLDS, James
PATTIE, Reuben GARNETT and Thomas ANDREWS.
December 22, 1779 Reuben GARNETT and Thomas ANDREWS signed a
bill of sale for negroes from John TUCKER to Joshua GARNETT.
Muscoe GARNETT of Mount Pleasant also signed a bond for negroes
purchased by Joshua GARNETT.
Joshua GARNETT was a lieutenant of militia in the American
Revolution.
About 1781 Joshua GARNETT moved to King and Queen County.
From 1782 to 1795 the Tax Lists for that county show he owned
325 acres there. He is believed to have lived at Travelers Rest,
King and Queen County be cause his wife lived there as well as
his daughter, Sallie GARNETT.
Joshua GARNETT married his first cousin Frances ANDREWS
[1749-1824], daughter of Thomas ANDREWS of Essex County [who
died in 1779]. They moved to King & Queen County, where he died
in about 1794.
He served in the Revolutionary War and had a grant of 366 acres
in Kentucky in 1787. From the Virginia Colonial Abstracts [page
46] we find that Joshua GARNETT signed a petition to the
Legislature on November 5, 1783 with many other residents of
King and Queen who state that they are "well affected to that
Independence which has lately been so gloriously achieved".
January 17, 1781 Joshua GARNETT and Frances, his wife, "formerly
of Parish of St. Ann, County of Essex, but now of the Parish of
Drysdale in County of King and Queen" conveyed 132 acres of land
in Occupatia Swamp bounding on those lands of James NOELL.
February 18, 1782 he conveyed another 100 acres in Essex
County---the remaining part of the tract on which Joshua GARNETT
formerly lived.
1787 he received a grant of 366 acres of land in Fayette County,
Virginia. The Land Book of King and Queen County lists Joshua
GARNETT as the owner of 322 acres of land during the years 1787,
1789, 1790, 1791, 1792, 1794, 1795, 1796, 1797, 1799 and 1800.
For the years of 1801 to 1807 the 322 acres are assessed to
Joshua GARNETT's estate indicating that he must have died around
1800. Joshua GARNETT must have died testate as it is noted that
his widow enjoyed a life estate in the 322 acres which he owned
there and this she would not have so enjoyed had there not been
a will---she would have only been entitled to a dower portion of
her husband's land."
