He enlisted for service during the War with Mexico, but was neverordered to leave Texas.
There is much oral family tradition concerning Arthur Goodson. Bornin Ireland, he immigrated to America by way of England. By 1850, hewas married and living in Montgomery County, Texas. His occupationwas Millwright. He was something of a legend due to his great sizeand strength. He stood well over six feet and had to have his shoesspecial made. A story passed down through the generations tells howhe killed a Panther one night with his bare hands. The animal hadgotten into his pig pen and in the dark he took it to be a dog. Whenhe entered the pen the Panther turned on him and the fight was on. Hecalled to his wife for help, but by the time she arrived with alantern and a Bowie knife the animal was already dead. Its claws wereimbedded in Arthur's shoulders and could only be removed with herassistance.
[10317] Tradition holds there were eleven children produced by this marriage, but only four are known.

[1810]
Along with his brother Daniel and his father Jesse, Stephen Taylorenlisted as a Private in Company C, 51st Tennessee Infantry, forservice during the War Between the States. An interesting story hasbeen passed down that his wife's family (the Ross's) supported theUnion cause; that any time someone received furlough to go home fromtheir respective army, a 'neutral' party had to be sent ahead, to makesure 'the other side' wasn't already there.
After the war, Stephen returned to Henderson County, where hecontinued to reside until around 1880, when he decided to move hisentire family (including his war-widowed mother) to Texas. Quitepossibly he was like a great many ex-patriated former Confederates. They had lost literally everything during the war, and the "radicalreconstruction" imposed on them afterwards seemed designed to preventthem from regaining even their dignity and self sufficiency. So theymoved West, looking for a place where they could start over, and aplace as far removed from the Federal government as possible.
Stephen ended up in Burnet County, Texas. The spot he picked tosettle was certainly isolated. There was nothing there but a vastprairie with a few scattered farms and cattle ranches. He went intobusiness operating a Cotton Gin and mercantile establishment. A towngrew up around this enterprise that became known as Taylor's Gin. In1898, a Post Office was established and the town name changed toBriggs, which it remains to this day.
This researcher's father, Lester R. Cobb, and his brother Floyd Cobb, recalled that as young men, their family traveled to visit the familyof Steve Taylor several times, and that the community was still goingby the name Taylor's Gin, in spite of the official name change, wellinto the 1920's and 1930's.
[1811] On this enumeration, he declared that he and both his parents wereborn in North Carolina. His mother was also living in his householdat this time.
[9827] They were first cousins, his mother and her father being siblings.

[3668] Although William claimed to have been born in Alabama, this is notlikely the case. The accounts of his uncles Phillip Floyd Ward andJesse J. Ward clearly show the entire Ward family relocated to Texasand the Indian Territory from Pontotoc County, Mississippi, immediately following the end of the Civil War in 1865.
[3669] He was probably actually born in either Texas or the Indian Territory, and years later simply recalled that his parents had come from Alabamaand Mississippi.
