Samuel Beman1,2

M, b. 2 February 1732/33, d. 20 July 1821
  • Samuel Beman was born on 2 February 1732/33 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut.3
  • He married Sarah Smith, daughter of Nathan Smith and Hester Green, circa 1754.
  • Samuel Beman died on 20 July 1821 at Plattsburg, Clinton Co., New York.4
  • He was buried at Riverside Cemetery, W. Plattsburg, New York.
  • Samuel Beman and his family were living in that part of Amenia, Dutchess County, New York, which was called Great Nine Partners, 1755-1767. Samuel lived in Amenia which was thought to be in Connecticut but when the NY State boundary survey was done, it proved to be in Livingston Manor, New York. New York State being at that time under the manorial system, this meant that he did not own his land freehold. Therefore he was one of the settlers recruited by Asa Douglas, a friend of Ethan Allen, for a mass grant of land at New Lebanon, which when another section of the boundary survey was done, also proved to be in New York, part of the Van Rennsalear Manor! Therefore he moved north to Hampton, New York which was not in any manor, and from there, by 1775 at latest, to Larrabee's Point, Vermont across Lake Champlain from Ticonderoga, where he is said to have kept a tavern, near Hand's Cove where Ethan Allen assembled his Green Mountain Boy's for the capture of Ticonderoga. At the approach of Burgoyne in 1777, the few settlers fled to the South. The Beman family went to Manchester, Vermont, home of their old friend John Roberts. A note found in the Revolutionary War pension files of Samuel's son Samuel (Nathan's brother) states that his (Nathan's) father was living in Manchester, Vermont in 1776. There Samuel Beman was listed among the freemen, and held town offices. There his daughter Sarah married 1777 Benjamin Vaughan, and his son Nathan married 1777/8 Jemimah, daughter of John and Susannah (Mayhue) Roberts. After peace was declared the Bemans returned to their lands at Shoreham.
Samuel served in the Revolution. The back of his tombstone reads: "Private 6th Regiment Dutchess County Militia." Samuel was in the American Army during the march through the woods to attack Quebec; afterward with the army at Fort now called Herkimer. He would never drink tea after the war as he said it was the price of blood.
In 1785, a settlement started across the lake called Plattsburg, the proprietors were men from Dutchess Co., NY, perhaps old friends of Samuel Beman. He joined them in Aug. 1785, purchasing 100 acres of land "lot 20." Whether Nathan accompanied his father or came later is not known.
On the 1790 Census, Samuel is listed in Plattsburg under Buman.
In 1795, Samuel Beman and son Nathan assisted in a survey of twp 6 and 7, old military tracts at that time, an unbroken wilderness. Benjamin Roberts of Vermont was a member of this party and it was while on this trip that Nathan and Benjamin started the settlement of Chateaugay.
  • On 1 May 1770 Samuel Beman resided at Nine Partners, Dutchess Co., New York; (distribution of the estate of Azariah Pinney, Hartford, Conn.).5
