Mathew MORGAN

1755 - 1824

ID Number: I98449

  • RESIDENCE: prob. Southampton Co. VA and Harnett Co. NC
  • BIRTH: 1755
  • DEATH: 1824
  • RESOURCES: See: notes [S3630]
Father: John MORGAN

Family 1 : Martha Patsy REESE

Notes

"Matthew Morgan was the one that moved to the Neill's Creek area of Harnett County. Harnett split off from Cumberland County, so both county records need to be checked.

Jeremiah and Nathanial Morgan were brothers. Their father was Matthew Morgan (1755-1824) who was married to Patsy Reese. I am descended from Jeremiah and Nathanial's brother John Morgan (1785-1820).

I am now looking at a second set of Morgan notes. It only lists three children of Matthew & Patsy Resse Morgan: John, Amos & Mary. No other children are listed.

My earlier reply to where I mention Jerimiah & Nathaniel comes from records compiled by Wayne S. Morgan of Buies Creek, NC. I've spent the past several minutes trying to follow the trees he has listed. He is showing at least 6 children of Matthew Morgan (1755-1824). They are: Mary Morgan (Revills), Amos Morgan, Jeremiah Morgan, Nathaniel Morgan, John Morgan, & Reese E. Morgan."

From [email protected] or [email protected]

"I am familiar with Matthew and his family but I cannot connect them with Jeremiah and Nathaniel. I know several researchers have suggested this connection based on the 1790 Cumberland NC census. 1790 Census lists four males under 16 in the Matthew Morgan household. Jeremiah & Nathaniel are speculated to be the right age to be two of them but there is no other documentation to my knowledge. Also I have a report attributed to the Cumberland Co index to Real Estate Conveyances, Register of Deeds Office. Deeds in Book 23, pp 274 & 275 state that Mary was Matthew's daughter & that Amos & John were his sons. There is no mention of any other sons being Jeremiah and Nathaniel.

I have a John Morgan b c 1713 as the father of Matthew and I believe also John was married to Mary Tudor and to the widow Felts and possibly the widow Martin. His will of 14 April 1781 (Sussex County Virginia Will Book C page 420 & 421) supports this vie!
w. I agree your John was married to Martha Patsy Reese but I just can't find any proof connecting Jeremiah and Nathaniel with Mathew.

I have a fair amount on Jeremiah and lots on Nathaniel. I thought at one time they were all of one family and connected to my James Morgan ancestor. Even if they were not Mathew's sons I thought they might be close relatives. I traced down Morgan surname ancestors from Jeremiah, Nathaniel, and James and compared notes, then DNA samples. Nothing is matching but things are close enough to keep looking for proof or an explanation. From a DNA standpoint it looks like three different lines, a frontier adoption, a coincidence, or possibly a name change.

From family memoirs (written c 1890) and Nathaniel's will documents and the bio of his son Jeremiah it certainly appears all of these folks moved in similar migration routes. I just can't nail anything down.

Rather than cluttering up the board perhaps you and any others interested in these lines could contact me at [email protected] and we could exchange data. Thanks again for the response. Al

I would appreciate any information and addresses you could share. Another researcher has quoted pertinent sources as "Ashe's 1905 Biography of Mark Morgan" and "The Bible of Rueben Morgan". I have not been able to find either of these. Do you know of them? Your Patsy Reese reference matches mine. I also used the John Reese will as a reference.

Nathaniel Morgan b. 21 September 1778 NC had six sons and one daughter with Mary Ann Polly Ellis. (James A., John, Joshua, Josiah, Jesse, Jeremiah, and Mary Ann). After divorcing Mary Ann he married Chrissa Gibson Jones. His son Jeremiah is the Jeremiah Morgan whose Contra Costa California holdings became Morgan Territory State Park. He has quite a story. Thanks again for your reply. I'll look forward to your data. Al
