  • And was also a graduate of the University of Dublin. Increase Mather preached in England and then returned to Massachusetts in 1661 where he was pastor of the North Church in Boston from 1664 until his death. He was President of Harvard College from 1685 until 1701. In 1688, as the Representative of the Massachusetts Bay Colony to England he petitioned to King James II and to William of Orange for the restoration of the Massachusetts Charter which had been revoked by Charles II. It was reinstated in 1689 after William became king. Increase Mather was a voice against the witchcraft hysteria, writing in 1692 that letting ten witches escape was preferable to condeming one inocent person.

  • Richard Mather was a farmer, he settled first at Dorchester, Massachusetts but a few years after his marriage removed to Lyme, Connecticut. In 1687 he bought a tract of land in Lyme from Hezekiah Usher of Boston. However, Richard died the next year, at the age of 35, on the fifty-third anniversary of the landing in America of his grandfather, for whom he was named (17 Aug 1635). Although he died young, his descendants far outnumber the other Mather branches.4
