Edward Bobet1

M, b. before 1627, d. 25 June 1675
  • Edward Bobet was probably born before 1627 at England (at least age 16 in 1643).
  • He married Sarah Tarne, daughter of Myles Tarne and Sarah Faukner, at Boston, Massachusetts, on 7 September 1654.2
  • Edward Bobet died on 25 June 1675 at Taunton, Massachusetts.3
  • Another source says Edward Bobet died in March 1676 at Taunton, Massachusetts, killed while at work (a casualty of King Philip's War).4
  • Also known as Edward Bobbet.2
  • Immigrant ancestor to America before 1643 (first recorded at Taunton in 1643).
  • In 1643 Edward Bobbett of Taunton appeared on the List of those able to bear Arms in New Plymouth.5
  • On 19 November 1652 Jonas Austin of Taunton..., yeoman, sold to Edward Bobbett of Taunton, a certain parcel of land... (in) Taunton aforesaid on the south side of the Great River.6
  • In 1653/54 Edward Bobett was among those recorded as proprietors of the Bloomerie (Iron Works) at Taunton.7
  • On 15 March 1659, William Parker of Taunton, aged sixty years, made his will. He mentions "my lott on the other side of the great River; lying betwixt the lott of John Parker and the land that was Edward Bobbitts."8
  • On 27 February 1664 Edward Bobbitt and James Philips appraised the estate of William Shepheard, deceased. Exhibited 3 March 1664.9
  • On 3 June 1665 William Harvey, Edward Bobbitt and Jonathan Briggs took the inventory of the estate of Francis Street of Taunton, deceased. Edward Bobbitt signed by his mark.10
  • Administration of Edward Bobet's estate was granted on 6 March 1676, at Plymouth, to Sarah, relict of Edward Bobbett.11
  • Inventory of estate taken on 6 March 1676 appraised by William Witherell, Samuel Smith. Sworn to by Sarah, widow of Edward Bobbett.12
  • Edward possibly came to Plymouth Colony about 1638/1639 (from a list of original proprietors of Taunton, dated about 1675). The first record of Edward Bobet is in 1643, at Plymouth, where he is listed among fifty four others on a list of those between sixteen and sixty years of age, and who are able to bear arms. On 6 Jun 1649, he appears in the Plymouth Court records, under the Presentments of Grand Inquest, "Wee p-sent Edward Bobbit of Taunton, for receuing pay for stollen wampon." He was evidently cleared of this charge. Edward bought his first land 19 Nov 1652 from Jonas Austin of Taunton, yeoman. Edward is also described as a yeoman. In Oct 1652, he became one of the proprietors of the "Bloomerie," as the ancient Iron Works of Taunton were called, on Two Mile River, Edward being one who subscribed £10 for the enterprise. His homestead was between the river and the old highway from Taunton to Freetown, not far from a stream then called "Joshua's Creek." It adjoined the property of John Macomber, and later of purcheses by Edward Bobet, his son. In 1658, along with John Hathaway and Timothy Holloway, Edward Bobet purchased 400 acres of land in Taunton, part of which became the farm upon which Edward resided for the remainder of his life. On 1 Jun 1668, he was one of the proprieters of what was called the "North Purchase," a tract of land on the northerly side of Taunton which extended westerly to Rehoboth. In 1668 he was chosen a member of the "Grand Enquest" of Plymouth Colony, and on 5 Jun 1671 he appears on "The names of the persons appointed by the Court to view the Damage done to the Indians by the Horses and Hoggs of the English." On 25 Jun 1675, as King Philip's War broke out, the Bobet family took refuge in the garrison at Taunton. Family tradition states that he returned to his house to secure some necessary items (perhaps a cheese hoop, as the story says), accompanied by his dog. On his way back to the fort he became aware that he was being followed and climbed a tree in an effort to hide from his persuers. His dog however, probably brought along with the thought that he would warn Edward of danger, gave away his location. He was discovered by the Indians and killed. His grave is in a private yard, near Berkely Ridge, said to be on the spot where he was killed, and is marked by a bronze Memorial Tablet, placed in 1911, funded by contributions from descendants from all over the U.S. and Canada. His original stone is now in Historical Hall and reads, "Edward Bobbett, Kld June 1675." From the inventory of his estate, taken in Mar 1676, Edward owned several town rights of Taunton, comprising several hundred acres, which afterwards were set off to his sons. In 1684, at his widow Sarah's request, Edward Bobet Jr. was appointed to administer the estate and was made guardian of the minor children.13
