Walter Palmer1,2,3

M, b. circa 1589, d. 19 November 1661
  • Walter Palmer was born circa 1589 at Nottinghamshire, England, (based on estimated date of marriage).4
  • He married first at England before 1614 a wife (name unknown) Some sources call her Anne, but this is not confirmed. She died before 1633.4
  • Walter Palmer married second at Roxbury, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, before June 1633 Rebecca Short.5
  • Walter Palmer died on 19 November 1661 at Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut.
  • Walter Palmer came to New England in 1629. He was first at Chrarlestown, then at Rehoboth in 1644, and at Stonington, Connecticut in 1653. On 1 June 1633 Walter "Pamer," Rebeckah his wife and Grace "Pamer" their daughter were admitted to Charlestown church. He was a Freeman 18 May 1631 (his absence from the 19 October 1630 list of those wishing to be free may have been a consequence of his pending trial for manslaughter). Propounded freeman of Plymouth Colony 4 June 1645 and admitted 28 October 1645.4
  • Tradition says that Walter Palmer was born in some town or village in Nottinghamshire, England. A record of him is found in Charlestown, Massachusetts, dated 14 May 1634. Abraham and Walter Palmer, both citizens of Charlestown, and probably brothers, were made freemen by the great and general court of Massachusetts Bay. Abraham was a merchant from London and a sergent in the Pequot War. Walter was Constable at Charlestown in 1633. In the "Book of Possessions", complied in 1638, "The possessions of Walter Palmer, within Charlestown are given as two acres of land in the East Field putting south on the Back street", with a dwelling house and , "other appurtenances, five acres of arable land, milch cow commons six and a quater acres, four acres more or less in the line field, eight acres of meadow lying in the Mystic Marshes, four acres of meadow lying in the Mystic Meadow, five acres of woodland in the Mystic field, five acres of meadow on the west of Mt. Prospect, three acres of meadow on the north-east of Mt. Prospect, thirty acres of woodland, eighty-six acres of land scituate in the watefield". In the division of the lands on the Mystic side, Walter Palmer and his son John received their proportion about 1643. Around that same time the men who agreed to found a new town met in Wymouth to prepare for the settlement of a place to be named Seacunke. Walter Palmer and William Cheseborough were among those in attendence. In 1645 the settlement was assigned to within the jurisdiction of Plymouth Colony and Walter Palmer was its representative in the General Assembly. The name Seacuke was changed to Rehoboth. In 1653, Walter Palmer and Cheseborough removed to the newly settled place of Wequetoquoc, which was later called Southernton and finally Stonington, Connecticut. In Stonington, Walter became the owner of about twelve hundred acres of land, part of which lay on the eastern slope of Togwonk, crossing Auguilla Brook. The name of Walter's first wife has been given as both Ann and Elizabeth, although some genealogies do not specify a name. His second marriage was to Rebecca Short, who had been a member of Eliot's church in Roxbury, Massachusetts.
  • His will was dated on 19 May 1658 sworn 25 February 1661[/2] and proved 11 May 1662, Walter Palmer bequeathed to "my son John a yoke of three year old steers and a horse"; to "my daughter Grace 20s."; to "all my grandchildren 20s. apiece"; to "my son Jonas half the planting lot at the new meadow river by Seaconcke, & the lot between John Butterwoth's according to the four score pound estate & the use of half the housing & half of the whole farm for four years"; to "my son William the other half of the same farm at Seaconck forever, and to take Robert Martine or some other skillful man & to divide the housing & the whole farm in two equal parts & to take his own & dispose of it as he pleaseth ... also a mare with her foal, two red oxen & a pair of steers of three year old apiece, four cows & a musket with all such things as are his own already"; "the other half of the farm at Seaconcke I give to my son Gersham forever after the end term of four years"; residue to "my loving wife, whom with my son Elihu I make my full executor to pay my debts & to bring up my children & to pay them their portions ... but in case my wife shall marry again before my children are brought up & their portions paid, then my three sons Elihu, Nehemiah & Moses to enter upon the farm & estate & to pay unto their mother £10 per annum during her natural life & the land & estate duly valued to be equally distributed among my children Elyhu, Nehemia, Moses, Benjamin, Gersham, Hannah & Rebecca with consideration of the £10 yearly to be paid to their mother, but if my loving wife pay their portions according to their discretion & my three sons Elihu, Nehemiah & Moses possess the land, they shall give £20 apiece out of the land to my son Benjamin besides his mother's portion in three year's time"; if "Elyhu, Nehemiah or Moses decease before they have any years, Benjamine is to succeed in their part of the farm and give to my daughter Elizabeth two cows" [ SPR 1:383].
The inventory of the estate of "Walter Palmer now deceased at Sothertowne in the county of Suffolke" was taken the last of March 1662 and totalled £1644 5s., including "housing and lands" valued at £661 and "goods at New London, Seaconcke & the Dutch" valued at £120 [ SPR 4:128].4
  • The name of Palmer was originally a common title of those who had returned from the Holy Land, and who carried a palm branch as a token of their pilgrimage. It became a common surname in England and several of the name founded families in New England prior to 1635.

Family 1: a wife (name unknown)

  • He married first at England before 1614 a wife (name unknown) Some sources call her Anne, but this is not confirmed. She died before 1633.4

Family 2: Rebecca Short b. bt 1608 - 1618, d. 15 Jul 1671

  • Walter Palmer married second at Roxbury, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts, before June 1633 Rebecca Short.5

"Walter Pamer" was admitted as an inhabitant of Charlestown in 1629 [ ChTR 2]. He appears in the lists of Charlestown inhabitants of 9 January 1633/4 and January 1635/6 [ ChTR 10, 15].
On 28 September 1630 a coroner's jury met to "inquire concerning the death of Austen Bratcher ... dying lately at Mr. Cradock's plantation." The jury found "that the strokes given by Walter Palmer were occasionally the means of the death of Austen Bratcher, & so to be man~slaughter." Palmer was bound over for trial on 19 October, but at that court the case was continued to 9 November, at which time a trial was held, and the jury found Palmer not guilty [ MBCR 1:77-79, 81].
The two eldest children of Walter Palmer, Grace and John, were certainly born in the middle years of the second decade of the seventeenth century. For the next three children, Elizabeth, William and John, the chronological evidence is not so helpful. All three of them could be ten years younger than the estimates given here without contradicting anything we know about them. Were this the case, a large gap would open up between the birthdates of the second and third of Walter's children, suggesting that he may have had two wives in England rather than one. For the sake of simplicity, and pending further evidence, we choose here the solution which gives Walter only two wives in all.
Along with William Cheseborough , Thomas Stanton, George Dennison and his son-in-law Thomas Minor, Walter Palmer was one of the founders of Stonington, Connecticut, and he and many of his descendants played a leading role in the life of that town.. John Parish1

M, b. circa 1642, d. November 1715
  • John Parish was born circa 1642 at England.
  • He married first at Braintree, Norfolk Co., Massachusetts, on 30 June 1664 Hannah Jewell, daughter of Thomas Jewell and Grizel.2
  • John Parish married second at Groton, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts, on 29 December 1685 Mary Wattell, daughter of John Wattell and Mary Gold.3,2
  • John Parish died in November 1715 at Preston, New London Co., Connecticut.
  • During his lifetime, John Parish resided in Braintree, Mendon, Groton, and Ipswich, Mass., as well as Preston, Conn., and was probably the first of his line in New England. He may or may not have some relation with Thomas Parish of Cambridge, who came to New England on the Increase in 1635. Another "early Parish" is Captain Edward Parish who settled in Maryland. The early New England family with the name of Paris, also seems to have no connection to John Parish. John first appears in Braintree, Mass. where he married Hannah Jewell in 1664. After the birth of their first daughter the family removed to Mendon, Mass., where John Parish took an original proprietor's lot of twenty acres. His name is mentioned several times in the "Annals of Mendon." During, or just after King Philip's War, he went to Groton, Connecticut. In the Concord records is found an agreement of the inhabitants of Groton, assembled at Concord, 10 Dec 1677, "that those present would go up in the spring following, and begin to repair our habitations again," an agreement signed by John Parish. At Groton he was a member of the council of saftey which met in Boston, 9 May 1689 just after Gov. Andros was deposed, and of which he was the only representative from Groton. He was also elected a representative to the General Court. On 17 Mar 1691/1692, during King William's War, John is in an agreement for the security of the town. He is called Sargt. John Parish, and with others, was to compose one of the garrisons for the towns defense. Having experienced one Indian attack while at Mendon, John Parish moved to Chebacco Parish, Ipswich, Mass. where four more children were born. From Ipswich, the family then went to Preston, Connecticut where he and his second wife were admitted to the First Church of Preston on 15 Nov 1704 by letter from the Ipswich Church. His will was proved 8 Nov 1715, the original now at New London, Conn.
  • He and Mary Wattell were members of the at First Congregational Church, Preston, New London Co., Connecticut, on 15 November 1704 admitted with letter from Ipswich.4

Samuel Parish1

M, b. circa 1665, d. 13 May 1735
  • Samuel Parish was probably born circa 1665 at Mendon, Worcester Co., Massachusetts.
  • He married Marcy Madiver, daughter of Joel Madiver and Rebecca, at Chebacco Parish, Ipswich, Essex Co., Massachusetts, on 24 May 1699.2
  • Samuel Parish died on 13 May 1735 at Norwich, New London Co., Connecticut.3
  • Probably eldest son, mentioned before Benjamin in the will of his father. In 1698/99 and 1700 his name appears in the church records at Essex, Mass., then Chebacco Parish. Later, after his father went to Connecticut, Samuel was admitted as an inhabitant of Norwich, Conn., in 1716. On 18 Apr 1719 and on 28 Apr 1719 he bought land in Norwich along the west side of the Quinnebaug River, which he made his homestead. In a quiteclaim deed after his death, his children, Joel, Solomon, Nathaniel and Mary Parish, relinquished this tract to "our brother Samuel Parish," 9 Jun 1735, the others, Nehemiah and Rebecca, not being of age at the time.

[S143] Roswell Parish, Parish Des, p.4 "It should be stated that the record of Samuel's marriage as given in the Ipswich Vital Records is "Martha Matafor and Samuel Parish at Chebacco, May 24, 1600." I am assuming that the wife Martha (often pronounced Marthy) was Marcy Madiver (or Madever) for the following reasons: 1- I have searched New England records in vain for another mention of the name Matafor. It sounds like Madiver. 2- In the Norwich Vital and Newent Church Records, Samuel's wife is Marcy or Mercy, his daughter being Mercy. 3- Savage gives: "Madiver, Joel, Casco, son of Michael, driven by Indian war, 1676 to Boston, there by wife Rebecca had Mercy, b. 12 Aug 1677; returned after the peace; and in the third war was killed by the French, Aug 1703." 4- "Mercy daughter of Joel and Rebecca Madever, b. Aug 12, 1677" - Boston Vital Records. 5- The family names Joel, Mercy and Rebecca of Samuel's children. 6- The line of flight and return of refugees from Falmouth during and after the three wars, which probably passed through Ipswich and nearby towns. The doubtless hospitable reception and more or less prolonged stay of these refugees at points along that line." Married May 24, 1669.
