" In August last F. W. Colby, of Greenwood township, this county, while working on the State Capitol building fell with a scafold and had his leg broken. In November his son Free Colby, a young man of 21 years, while feeding a broom corn machine, at Republican City, Neb., had his arm badly lacerated. News came to the family that his arm was torn off. This so shocked the mother who did not hear from her son for two days, that she did not recover from it, but gradually grew worse until Saturday, Feburary 3rd, she expired. She was 57 years old and leaves a husband, son and daughter to morn her loss. The stricken family have the earnest sympathy of the community".

Pierce, Clifton F., 91, of Barre and formerly of Montpelier, died December 27 at his home. He was born in Montpelier on April 18, 1912, son of Joseph and Allie (Colby) Pierce. He attended St. Michael's School in Montpelier and was a 1931 graduate of St. Michael's High School. On August 19, 1950, he married Leola Jarrett in St. Augustine Church in Montpelier. She died Feb. 18, 1979. He was employed by Endicott Johnson Shoe Store and worked in Barre, St. Johnsbury, Montpelier and Keene, N.H. He managed the Montpelier store from 1947 until his retirement in 1977. He owned and operated Sideline Antiques for over 30 years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater and received five battle stars. He was a member of St. Augustine Church, Bishop Brady Council #399 of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion #3 and Brown-Johnson Post #792 VFW. He was also a member of the Montpelier Senior Citizens Center. He is predeceased by two sisters, Margery Grimes and Helena Lewis; a brother, Clyde Pierce; a niece and three nephews. Survivors include grand nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews.
