ID Number: I95912

  • RESIDENCE: Columbia Co. GA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1785
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2387]
Father: John (Benin) BENNING
Mother: Sarah COBBS

Notes

Elizabeth Benning married a Thompson. Her daughter, Julia married a Gartrell. Her daughter, Ann Eliza, married Major William S. Grady, a brilliant Confederate officer, who surrendered his life at Petersburg, Virginia. Major Grady, at one time owned the gas works at Athens, Georgia, and was a man of means. From the marriage of Major Grady to Ann Gartrell, sprang Henry Woodfin Grady, the South's great orator and editor, who made the Atlanta Constitution famous, and who, in the language of the epitaph, inscribed upon his monument, in the heart of Atlanta, "literally died loving a nation into peace."

"Frank Lee, as he was called, devoted his life to public service. Lee lived in Loudoun County where he was chief of the local militia and a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. He was concerned about the rights of colonies and in 1766 signed the Westmoreland Association resolution against the Stamp Act. After marrying Rebecca, Frank moved to Richmond County, where he was elected to the Virginia Legislature. He served as a member of the Virginia Conventions of 1774 and 1775 and as a member of the Continental Congress. Frank and his brother, Richard Henry, were the only pair of brothers to sign the Declaration of Independence. Francis and Rebecca Lee both died in 1797 and are buried at Mt. Airy."

Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography, Volume II, I--Fathers of the Revolution: Francis Lightfoot Lee was born at Stratford, Westmoreland county, Virginia, October 14, 1734, son of Hon. Thomas and Hannah (Ludwell) Lee. He was educated at Stratford by Rev. Mr. Craig, a Scotch clergyman. He became a member of the house of burgesses for Loudoun county, and with his brother, in 1765, signed the Westmoreland declaration against the Stamp Act. He succeeded Colonel Richard Bland as delegate to the Continental Congress, August 15, 1775, serving 1775-79. He signed the Declaration of Independence, assisted in preparing the articles of confederation, and d‚fended the rights of the states to the Newfoundland fisheries and the free navigation of the Mississippi river. He retired from Congress in the spring of 1779, and resumed his duties as master of extensive estates, and as justice of the peace of Richmond county. He represented the county in the state legislature for one or two terms. He died in Richmond county, April 3, 1797. He was sixth son of President Thomas Lee.
